Okay, I live in the great white north where roaches are half-an-inch long. I'm terrified of anything with more than four legs, and woke up screaming last night after dreaming a whole army of creepers in my dorm room.

Believe it or not, this will probably affect my decision.

Are the roaches in Washington D.C huge? How big?

Ever see Starship Troopers? That's kinda like D.C.

cockroaches are big (over 1" for sure), but i would be more concerned about the rats.

You should come check out the roaches down in S. Florida.

I wouldn't think it'd be a problem if you got a half-decent apartment/house/townhouse/whatever. They usually only congregate in the months between someone moving out and someone moving in. At least that's the trend in CA.

Luckily as a med student, you'll have the option of never being in your home anyway so you can always let a good landlord take care of it for you.

I hope you're all lying. You don't know how much I'm squirming right now.

You'll be in sheer fun when your first kid presents with scratching in his ear and it turns out to be a tiny roach in his ear canal. Oh yes. Sheer fun.

i'm really not kidding. i live in a nice apartment in d.c. had cockroaches in the apartment, have seen rats on the street, porches, etc.

Just wear one of those big chemical hazard suits.

[pj]: lol. I'm thinking of taking one to the interview.

This is seriously my worst nightmare. I hope I don't show my patient how freaked out I am if I see that...

the roaches in NY are pretty hardcore too... They will walk up and take the potato chip right out your hand

Stay far, far away from Ponce. The roaches in Puerto Rico are the size of small mice. I'm assuming they're the same in Florida. And I do remember being shocked at how large they were in California when I moved there. I'd think they weren't nearly as big in DC as in the warmer climates.

I heard the roaches down south are so big they beg on the side of the road. "hey mon, can you spare a dollar?"

funny stuff, anyone see that comedian on comedy network?

Lord have mercy, I'm so scared of those things. I was hoping there would be no pictures in here. I'm so scared of roaches it's not for real. That will be a concern for me too.

I know it sounds pathetic, but they WILL and HAVE run me out of my own room. I've seen a rat before and that freaked me out because they have a face. BUT at least they run from you. Roaches kind of crawl towards you.

1. Thanks, now I'm sure someone's going to post pictures and I can't come back to this thread.

2. I know. I don't mind spiders, rats, mice, flies (you can imagine what my aparment's like) but all beetles and cockroaches are stupid. They don't know to run and its like they seek you out.

On my second day as a high school science teacher in New Orleans, a HUGE roach goes walking across the middle of my classroom during second period. (We're talking visable calf muscles on this sucker.) Of course all the girls are up on their chairs screeching, and the boys are leaning real far back to see what this new young white girl teacher from New England's going to do about the bug.

Terrified. But I squashed it under my nice new teacher shoes. It was quite a crunch. And the 10 full seconds of complete student silence afterwards were totally priceless.

Moral of the story: You can overcome this. Go to the best medical school that accepts you. Roaches and all.

Thanks, but I seriously doubt. It's fine and all during the day when I can leave/I'm not there. But at night when I'm trapped and I have to get into bed...ugggghhhh. I can't even think about it.

Have you ever seen those Maury episodes where he brings out the Madagascar hissing roaches and the women jump the railing and out of the studio...I am sure I would have out run them.

I hate to break this to you, but roaches tend to get bigger as the climate gets warmer. If you live in the North, and think the roaches are big, you will think they are huge in the South.

I've lived for several years in both Hawaii and New Orleans. Both of those places had huge roaches. Plus Hawaii had huge stinging centipedes and New Orleans had stinging catapillers.

Since insects account for the largest amount of biomass on our planet, I don't think you are going to get away from them.

hahahahhaha you should probably not have used the word "creeper"

from urbandictionary.com:

Creeper

A person who does weird things, like stares at you while you sleep, or looks at you for hours through a window. usually a close friend or relative.

Older men who hang out in college clubs and bars and stare at girls half their age and occasionally make obscene gestures and comments.

A man who is very odd and lurks around the mall staring at young girls . a creeper can also be a very wierd looking man or boy who does not like to socialize but just stays in a corner and stares at people .

Yeechhh. Just a matter of time before it was posted. Now we can't come back to this thread Magwii11.

Anyone ever seen Miyazaki's Nausicaa? It kind of looks like those bugs.

I live in the north of the north and cockroaches totally aren't even a concern here. In NYC, I had a cat and even when our neighbors had roach problems, we never had a single one...I definitely recommend a cat or two. That being said, I lived in Australia for a while and once woke up to a cockroach the size of my foot on the wall...definitely not something you ever want to do...luckily Off Deep Woods will dissolve cockroaches 😳)

To bad Princeton doesn't have a med school...I was there over a summer and the cockroaches would come in and then mysteriously die in the middle of the floor...that apartment was a little disturbing.

Yessss! A cat! I can't believe I never thought of that. It just opened up a whole bunch of options for me. Thanks BluePhoenix!

I bet it left a wonderful mark of gushiness on the floor.

Apparently small lizards don't eat smaller cockroaches....I've tried it.

A bit gross, but it worked for pretty much anything...cockroaches, rats, mice, spiders, bugs of any kind...anything she doesn't manage to scare away with her excess of energy, she eats.

In Boston the lucky ones have mice, the unlucky ones have cockroaches.

Our friends have lots of roaches, and they feed them to their scorpion, who grabs the roach and bends it in half before eating it. Gross.

Half-an-inch?? That's nothing! Everything's bigger in Texas...and WAY bigger for roaches. 😱

i saw some pretty big roaches in New Orleans. we're talking like 2 inches, and did you know that roaches can only fly when it's hot?

yea, so that means nasty flying roaches.

HATE the flying ones. So icky. :scared:

Here in Hawaii be gold plate the and wear them as as pins!!!!! TRUE up to 3 inches long. you just put Boxac acid (Powder)on the counters at night wipe them down in the morning and the take it to their nest on their feet. you will have dead bodies for about a week !! you should be fine until they bred again. I do this monthly. they are big and everywhere not matter how clean your house is . now don't get me started on the geckos....

there were geckos EVERYWHERE in africa. have you ever shut one in the hinge of a door? that's pretty nasty. the door won't completely shut, then you take a look and gecko juices are everywhere.

There were bugs and lizards all over the bungalow I stayed in on my safari in Africa! We also had monkeys prancing on our ceiling in the morning! It was all fine by me til we had to shower with them (bugs not monkeys!)

But OP- I am down in Atlanta and while there are bugs here we use a bug bomb from the pet store ever 4-6 months and it seems to work really well. My dad also sprays around his house but if you are in an apartment and check before that they hire a good exterminator you should be fine!

This is all gross and stuff, however not as gross as my last Habitat project. We were in VA so the roaches were much smaller than in Philly (where they're about 2"). However, the house was overrun. Absolutely disgusting, but whatever, life goes on. I'll attach a few pics for the daring.

If it looks like dirt in the photo, its a roach.

Wait...cockroaches can fly?!?!? EEEEKKKKKK!!!!! I've never seen a cockroach in person, only on TV and in movies. I never intend on seeing one either. I hate critters...omg I can't read this board anymore because the hair on my arms is standing up!

WHY did i look at them??????? :barf:

they can only fly if it's hot. i learned this my medical entomology class.

their wing muscles can't activate or something otherwise.

I just died a little while reading this thread. 🙁 Yuck. Tiny little cockroaches I can deal with. But huge FLYING ones? Oh, dear God. 4 years of med school in Fort Lauderdale is looking more grim than I ever thought possible.

What are cockroaches??? - Alaska Speaking 🙂

(I actually know all about bugs: lived on Molokai, HI for 2 years; Papua New Guinea for 5 wks; South Africa for 10 wks. )

Ew! My cat loves bugs too but I think I draw the line at huge, juicy spiders and even larger, even juicier roaches.

I don't want my cat eating that crap. Especially with all the gross crud in a roach's gut.

Speaking of giant flying insects. I was in a place in southern China one summer, and in the mornings, you could literally see dark droves of giant mosquitoes flying around. It was terrifying, I ran inside and hid out of fear of death.

Haha, ever see Joe's apartment with the cute animated roaches? Those roaches weren't bad sorts, but I don't think any of us will be so lucky as to meet genial, conversing roaches.

Personally, I have a stronger dislike for things like silverfish and centipedes and things that move much more quickly than they ought to.

I know exactly what you're talking about. We don't have that many insects in Alaska, but we definitely make up for their absence in mosquitoes. You'll be walking along and see this big, hazy, black cloud-like thing in front of you, like a puff of smoke; but it's really just millions of mosquitoes buzzing around in one spot. You basically have to bathe in mosquito repellent to go outside where I grew up in rural Alaska. Ahhh ... the sweet fragrance of DEET.

Peace Corps standard issue repellent is 98% DEET. It's some serious stuff.

uhh... Just reading this thread makes me feel like something is crawling on me....and we don't even have bugs!:scared:
