Okay, I live in the great white north where roaches are half-an-inch long. I'm terrified of anything with more than four legs, and woke up screaming last night after dreaming a whole army of creepers in my dorm room.

Believe it or not, this will probably affect my decision.

Are the roaches in Washington D.C huge? How big?

I wouldn't think it'd be a problem if you got a half-decent apartment/house/townhouse/whatever. They usually only congregate in the months between someone moving out and someone moving in. At least that's the trend in CA.

Luckily as a med student, you'll have the option of never being in your home anyway so you can always let a good landlord take care of it for you.

Stay far, far away from Ponce. The roaches in Puerto Rico are the size of small mice. I'm assuming they're the same in Florida. And I do remember being shocked at how large they were in California when I moved there. I'd think they weren't nearly as big in DC as in the warmer climates.

2. I know. I don't mind spiders, rats, mice, flies (you can imagine what my aparment's like) but all beetles and cockroaches are stupid. They don't know to run and its like they seek you out.

(We're talking visable calf muscles on this sucker.) Of course all the girls are up on their chairs screeching, and the boys are leaning real far back to see what this new young white girl teacher from New England's going to do about the bug.

Terrified. But I squashed it under my nice new teacher shoes. It was quite a crunch. And the 10 full seconds of complete student silence afterwards were totally priceless.

Moral of the story: You can overcome this. Go to the best medical school that accepts you. Roaches and all.

Thanks, but I seriously doubt. It's fine and all during the day when I can leave/I'm not there. But at night when I'm trapped and I have to get into bed...ugggghhhh. I can't even think about it.

Have you ever seen those Maury episodes where he brings out the Madagascar hissing roaches and the women jump the railing and out of the studio...I am sure I would have out run them.

I hate to break this to you, but roaches tend to get bigger as the climate gets warmer. If you live in the North, and think the roaches are big, you will think they are huge in the South.

I've lived for several years in both Hawaii and New Orleans. Both of those places had huge roaches. Plus Hawaii had huge stinging centipedes and New Orleans had stinging catapillers.

Since insects account for the largest amount of biomass on our planet, I don't think you are going to get away from them.

In NYC, I had a cat and even when our neighbors had roach problems, we never had a single one...I definitely recommend a cat or two. That being said, I lived in Australia for a while and once woke up to a cockroach the size of my foot on the wall...definitely not something you ever want to do...luckily Off Deep Woods will dissolve cockroaches 😳)

To bad Princeton doesn't have a med school...I was there over a summer and the cockroaches would come in and then mysteriously die in the middle of the floor...that apartment was a little disturbing.

Apparently small lizards don't eat smaller cockroaches....I've tried it.

A bit gross, but it worked for pretty much anything...cockroaches, rats, mice, spiders, bugs of any kind...anything she doesn't manage to scare away with her excess of energy, she eats.

Our friends have lots of roaches, and they feed them to their scorpion, who grabs the roach and bends it in half before eating it. Gross.

TRUE up to 3 inches long. you just put Boxac acid (Powder)on the counters at night wipe them down in the morning and the take it to their nest on their feet. you will have dead bodies for about a week !! you should be fine until they bred again. I do this monthly. they are big and everywhere not matter how clean your house is . now don't get me started on the geckos....

there were geckos EVERYWHERE in africa. have you ever shut one in the hinge of a door? that's pretty nasty. the door won't completely shut, then you take a look and gecko juices are everywhere.

There were bugs and lizards all over the bungalow I stayed in on my safari in Africa! We also had monkeys prancing on our ceiling in the morning! It was all fine by me til we had to shower with them (bugs not monkeys!)

But OP- I am down in Atlanta and while there are bugs here we use a bug bomb from the pet store ever 4-6 months and it seems to work really well. My dad also sprays around his house but if you are in an apartment and check before that they hire a good exterminator you should be fine!

Ew! My cat loves bugs too but I think I draw the line at huge, juicy spiders and even larger, even juicier roaches.

Haha, ever see Joe's apartment with the cute animated roaches? Those roaches weren't bad sorts, but I don't think any of us will be so lucky as to meet genial, conversing roaches.

Personally, I have a stronger dislike for things like silverfish and centipedes and things that move much more quickly than they ought to.

I know exactly what you're talking about. We don't have that many insects in Alaska, but we definitely make up for their absence in mosquitoes. You'll be walking along and see this big, hazy, black cloud-like thing in front of you, like a puff of smoke; but it's really just millions of mosquitoes buzzing around in one spot. You basically have to bathe in mosquito repellent to go outside where I grew up in rural Alaska. Ahhh ... the sweet fragrance of DEET.

Peace Corps standard issue repellent is 98% DEET. It's some serious stuff.
