I have been working for an EMS service as an EMT-Basic since late September of 2008 (around 8 months). I have averaged 7 hours a week and also have a lot of clinical hours in the hospital for training back in the spring of 2008. I am also doing research (about 15-20 hours/week) and will continue that in the summer and upcoming fall (I graduate in December 2009). Due to research and summer school I feel like I will be to overwhelmed and am thinking about quitting my job at EMS. I believe I got as much out of it as I can and want to gain some different experiences. I might try and do some volunteering/working in a special area at the local hospital in the fall (cath lab, OR) instead. Other upcoming activities for medical experience include an international surgery trip over the summer. My question is will this look bad on my application if they see I worked for an EMS service for 8 months and did not continue up until graduation seeing as it is my main focus for medical experience? I am applying right now for 2010 admission.

quit...i sure as hell did...the ems place i worked at was full of too much drama and BS.

I have no idea what adcoms would think, but my personal opinion is that if you're feeling burnt out then you should take a break. I can't imagine researching 15-20 hours a week, taking classes, applying to med school, and working for an EMS service. Your reasons for quitting sound valid, and it sounds like you've really enjoyed working and gained a lot from the experience! It sounds like it was a great one. But if you want to get some different experiences, then go for it. You only have so much time in college. Go with what you want to do.

Not that I would take much advice from an SDN forum (instead I would talk to a friend or mentor or something)...but since you asked.

Quit. medical school is a marathon provided you can get accepted. So no need to wear yourself down doing something that isn't fun anymore. Find something that is totally fun and meaningful that sets you apart...and I can promise you that EMS is not it cause that is like biology in medical school. You be like everyone else...along with research unless you are doing more than helping out.
