What business opportunities are common for a doctor?

I can think of the following:
- operating a clinic (common)
- medical consulting firm
- develop medical instruments

Seeing that only in exceedingly rare cases that the senior executives of health, pharmaceutical, or biotech companies have MD degrees, I am guessing that rising to the top of a public company would be nearly impossible.

A doc can also sign on with a corporation (ie occupational medicine).

A doc can also strive to write something worth reading outside an academic journal (think Atul and his books/periodical pieces).

A doc can also strive to improve the learning environment of medicine (think the docs that founded/created "Gunner training").

You're only bound by your imagination.

In regards to your last point, I think it is important to remember that very few MD's seek/want to be the head of a public company. That said, it is slim odds for everyone despite degree.
