What are some business ventures that doctors frequently do to earn extra money.

I have always been interested in opening a surgery center How hard is it to open your own surgery center and what kind of profit could one expect to make from that?

Any other ideas out there?

good thread--what kind of surgery center? theres always the option of business ventures completely unrelated to medicine, or only slightly related. or were you thinking more directly medicine related? any good links out there? who would the surgery center target? what size/throughput? location?

anyway i knew an md/mba who was trying to patent a device, an inventor type. inventing as a means of extra money is a little quirky though, back to the future like.

i guess the question with any business venture is--where are there unmet needs and purchasing power? any trends within industries or specialties?

I don't know about opening one yourself, but I do know that partners at surgery centers that focus on spine work (ortho/neurosurgeons) can make over $1M each, depending on where you practice, and the patient draw, whether you accept insurance, etc.

I guess I should of been a little more specific. I have an example of what I was thinking from back home. There is an outpatient surgery center that has operating rooms down low. Upstairs are officies for Surgical Podiatrists, orthos, ENT, some other surgeons.

If you were a practicing doctor, would it even be feasible to own both a practice and the surgery center?

And does anyone know where you can find information on how the whole process of opening one works?

If this surgery center is just for making extra money, you need to do high-cost elective procedures. This would be things like cosmetic surgery.

I think the guy mentioned earlier that Spine surgeons (Neuro and ortho) were mainly operating in these centers. Spine surgeons on average are the highest paid surgeons.
