Hey guys!
This is my first time on SDN as a poster so I'm sorry if I posted this incorrectly or in the wrong place! 🙁
Anyways, I'm stuck in a very difficult position and I'm reaching out to you guys for help. As everyone else out here, I want to make it to med school but my grades aren't helping me. I couldn't afford a 4 year university so I attended a CC for the first two years and came out with a 3.5 (once again, not good enough). After coming to the university (2nd quarter now), I received A's and a big fat D in my intro to bio class. (2.9 GPA now) This quarter is also bad, just failed my midterm(50%) in a intro-bio class and the highest I can get is a C, if I ace the final. I'm debating on whether I should just fail this class and retake it?
Also, I don't have many extra curricular but I'm starting a one year research position next quarter. I've realized that I will be doing a post-bacc program after graduation in order to raise my gpa. I haven't take physics or O-Chem yet. Also got straight C's in my intro to chem series.
Sorry for the long rant, need help 🙁 Thanks!

Yeah, it sounds like you know where your weaknesses are. I wouldn't purposefully fail a class, do your best.

A couple things to consider - medicine requires extreme work ethic, dedication, and discipline. You're going to have to make it a number one priority (aside from maybe spirituality). for me, this means setting aside time in my schedule to study and make getting good grades a top priority. I don't think you have to be a genius to get into med school, I think you have to invest the time and discipline. If you're working too much or partying it can be a huge issue. I've even seen one guy who was spending way too much time involved at church and couldn't pull off A's. If you really want it, school has to be a top priority.

Yeah with your grades I'd say post Bach for MD or good MCAT score for DO

Yeah, I agree. I will be applying to Post-Bach programs and I realized that I have to dedicate everything to medical school, even if that means a few extra years after college. It's something I want but wanting isn't enough. I have to put in the work for it too.

Don't fail a class in order to retake it. I believe MD schools (and even DO schools now) don't do grade replacement if a class is taken again. They will simply average the two grades you received for the course.

Perhaps your study technique needs an overhaul? I would ask some kids in your class who are doing well what their study methods are. Not everyone is the same in terms of learning but maybe it will give you some better ideas on how to set yourself up for success.

As far as EC's, your grades are more important right now. But once you begin to get a handle on your classes, start volunteering. Hospice, hospitals, and homeless shelters seem to always be looking for kids to help out. Really beef up those EC's and you have a better shot. Take my advice with a grain of salt. I am only in undergrad as well, but most of what I said are things I've read on here and just regurgitated. Good luck!
