PROTECT YOUR PATIENTS! ACT NOW TO OPPOSE AB 890

If passed during a vote anticipated on Wednesday, Assembly Bill 890 would grant full practice authority to nurse practitioners (NP). This bill would remove critical patient protections by allowing NPs to practice without physician supervision, putting patients at risk of avoidable complications and poor outcomes.

Contact your Senator NOW to ensure patient safety is protected!
· Senate Pro Tem Toni Atkins @SenToniAtkins
· Senator Anthony Portantino (Chair Appropriations Committee) @Portantino
· Senator Patricia C. Bates (Vice Chair) @SenatorPatBates
· Senator Steven Bradford, member Appropriations Committee @SteveBradford
· Senator Brian Jones, member Appropriations Committee @SenBrianJones
· Senator Bob Wiecowski, member Appropriations Committee @BobWieckowskiCA

Key Points:

§ NPs are valuable members of the healthcare team; however, their training does not provide the expertise required to perform interventional pain procedures and medically manage pain without supervision.

§ Physicians in key specialties receive extensive training to prevent, immediately recognize, and appropriately handle serious complications that can occur with these procedures.

§ Ensuring that individuals who perform these procedures have obtained requisite training protects patients from avoidable complications and poor outcomes.

The Spine Intervention Society submitted comments to the Senate Appropriations Committee on 8/17/2020 highlighting training requirements for interventional spine procedures.

Please also share this email with your California colleagues and encourage them to oppose AB 890.

A specialist in that state I recommend they all band together and refused to treat any patient that has been treated by a nurse practitioner for interventional care. Let the nurses fight over the stupid people who don’t know when they need to see a doctor.

As a pain NP, I’m fully opposed to mid levels going anywhere near the freaking spine (amongst a long list of other things). Craziness.
