Is getting into California Ob-Gyn residencies as competitive as getting into California med schools? Any suggestions how one can be attractive to the programs? Thanks.

As someone who just matched in a California residency, I can say that it's probably an entirely different process than applying to medical school. I only got one med school interview in California (and I applied to almost all the programs), but I interviewed at four programs (of seven I applied to) in CA for residency. It's a great place to live, so of course they're going to get a lot of interest. But there are many many residency programs in the state and they run the gamut in terms of competitiveness and prestige, so if being in California is what you want, chances are good that you can find a residency program that will be happy to have you. If you will only be happy with UCSF or UCLA, well, that's a different story...

I don't think it is ridiculously tough, as long as you apply widely. I got some interviews, and got the impression that I would have matched at a couple places. In fact, 4 of the 24 unfilled positions were in CA.

If you want it, do decent in school and on boards, and interview reasonably well, you should be able to get a decent spot in CA.

Yeah, but two of those positions don't fill because they are one year only prelim spots at UCLA.

Ok, so you want to nit pick....well, then 2 out of 22. Still almost 10% of the unfilled spots were in CA. If you look at years past there were a significant number of uniflled in CA.

The point is that it is pretty reasonable to match in CA.

Thanks for this info - I am a Cali native and want to come home. I had to move across the country to go to school - like probably 50% of med students from Cali. I am your typical average med student so I wasn't sure how things would work out. Nice to hear there's hope.

there are no good academic programs in LA from what I have heard. USC is in the crapper. They are currently in search of a chairman and no one is biting. The rumor-mill(and we all know about how much rumors are worth so take it with a grain of salt and come to your own conclusions) says that the dean wants a chairman with a lot of NIH backing but is offering a measly salary and is not focusing enough on the clinical aspects of the program. seems as though he is hoping for someone to bite simply because of the location being LA. nevertheless, i am not a fan of a program that can't even fill its chairman position. not having a chairman is somewhat of a red flag from what i hear.

as for ucla...my friends that go to medical school there get tons of training at olive view since it is county. gyn onc at ucla is supposed to be great. however, i hear that the ucla program has similar issues as the usc program in terms of the dean pushing for more NIH dollars and not balancing with enough clinical in westwood. i dont think ucla is as far down the river as usc is since i believe the program actually has a chair(unlike usc). nevertheless, i think both programs still get their lion's share of applicants because, well, its LA.

again...this is all just rumor on my part. i am applying to both programs and am looking forward to the prospect of interviewing at both too.

Agree.

Our program looks at the individual- their abilities, their character/personality and their career goals. That holds more weight than where the person was raised.

We can make more of a positive impact on people's lives with the right folks on our team.
