Caffeine

I think caffeine inhibits aldosterone and alcohol inhibits adh, one of the reasons you get more hungover from booze than coffee

coffee is a diuretic so i think it would inhibit adh, also its effect on keeping you awake is thought to function by competively inhibiting adenosine

Got a good one, a patient comes in and is hyperglycemic, what abnormalities would you expect in relation to endocrinology

camp phosphodiesterase on the cellular level. it prolongs the effects of the catecholines (epinephrine and norepinephrine). I don't know what everyone else is talking about.

yep, caffeine is a diuretic

In one week in my med school's fluids / electrolytes / renal block, we had two different lecturers, one who said "We all know caffeine is a diuretic, so..." and another one said, "If you believe the hype that caffiene is a diuretic..."

Ahh, sweet nectar of bean.

Yes caffeine is a diuretic, but that is not what the question is asking. What does caffeine inhibit, meaning why does caffeine make you more alert.

Freelove is right. Caffeine is a cAMP phosphodiesterase inhibitor, which causes a build up of cAMP in your cells, much like adrenaline would.
