I was wondering how many/ which dentals school required calc (I or I&II) as a pre-req? It's not required for my major and I'd really like to avoid taking it.

Thanks for your help!

You would have to go to the school's website and they will let you know that 👍

Yep, Harvard is an example of a school that requires calculus 🙂

I feel your pain. Just one of those classes you have to hurdle over... but I'd contact the school you want to go to and ask to be safe. For my MAJOR I needed it. For example though, the school I am at right now requires 2 semesters of calculus classes (no statistics classes) and the school I am transferring to for next requires only one and then a statistics.

All depends on where you go, ask the school.

I have Statistics done.. I just really hate calculus. I'm planning on checking for each individual school I apply to when they time comes, but I just wanted to hear from everyone. Thanks 🙂

Harvard is the only school that requires Calc II but quite a few schools require Calc I. I was under the impression that most people hold off on taking Calc II until 2nd semester senior year, and only take it if they get accepted to Harvard.

Boston University also requires 2 math courses as pre-requisites. I know it's hard to find in the ADEA guide, but I emailed them and they said calculus I is required along with another math (calculus II or linear algebra). Yeah molarexpress, I agree with you, I don't enjoy taking math it's so boring especially the linear algebra this semester....

Is it really that bad? What's your major? I thought most science majors require at least 2 years of calc. I finished my second year of calc in high school which was a relief but continued for my math minor, I just finished diff eqs and lin. alg. But most certainly Calc II is doable for most intellectuals like ourselves =P It's really not that bad.

I'm pretty sure majority of the schools require Calc I. I know TX schools take applied Cal.

Just copied and pasted directly from the texas school's sites. I'm not seeing calc on there. In fact, I haven't run across that many schools that DO require calculus. Maybe I'm missing something...

Careful, it's all relative. You seem to be strong in math which obviously makes it easier for you. It can sound a little condescending when you say it's not that bad to someone who struggles with it.

It's like the DAT, some people work and work and work at the PAT and struggle to get a 17. I did one practice test before taking the DAT and got a 20 on the real thing. Chemistry is not my strong point. I studied the most for GC and ended up with a 16. But I seriously did not even study for RC and PAT and they were my highest scores.

I think it's always good to take Calc if you want to go to dental school. It at least shows that you have some background on the "harder" math (although there are a lot of hard core math courses besides calc). I thought a lot of schools require Calc I or, when they list math, aren't they referring to calc?! (am I wrong?! 🙄. You also never know when schools will change their prerequisites too.

Where that is somewhat true, it's all anxiety. Maybe I'm not being sensitive enough ahha 😛

take Calculus.

Graphs are not always linear!

Also, it's better when u learn statistics.

Nah don't do it...just save 2 classes senior year in case you get into a school that requires it. I think 80% of people here who apply to many schools are saving many classes that they MIGHT need to take if they are accepted to a certain school. 😀

No it's not all about anxiety

For alot of people its all about speed. I had a friend who knew the math pretty well and woulda pulled a 20 on QR but he ran outa time after 20 questions. Some people just arent good at speed math.

I haven't seen calc listed as a pre-req on any dental school website. I just though calc is a pre-req for the other dental school requirements Bio, Chem and physics. I'm trying to avoid taking it myself but it doesn't seem like there's a way around it.
