How do you calculate retakes.

I always hear that you take the average of both scores.

I can interpret this statement in two ways. Take the following example.
(each class is worth three credits.)

class 1- A
class 2- A
class 3- B
class 3 retake-A

Does this mean I take the average of all 4 grades.

Or do I first take the average of class 3 and the retake and then average that with the other two grades.

It does seem to make quite a difference. Just averaging the 4 scores I get a GPA of 3.75.

If I do it the second way, the GPA comes to 3.83.

good question. i think the latter way is how it works...? im guessing, though.
bump.

Couldve made a more interesting title to catch your attention.....

But if anyone knows the answer to this question, your help will be greatly appreciated.

or maybe it's the first way... that route would discourage retakes. that one's probably it lol

Thats what I'm thinking as well but I'd like a more definitive answer. lol

ANYONE!!!

i'll see what i can do to help.. h/o

you average all the grades together. Class 1, 2, 3, and 3 retake. They would all count equally.

So an A, A, F, A(retake) at 3 credit hours a piece would be a 3.0

Hope its clear.

wow, that was fast. i think i blinked and my thread disappeared. heh.

and thanks chubbychaser

Thanks dude... Although I was hoping on the later :scared:

AACOMAS uses only the more recent score of retakes in calculating GPA. Not sure about AMCAS.

So that means in terms of GPA, retaking a class is the equivalent of taking a different class with the same units, except they would prefer the latter.

yes, if by "latter" you mean a related upper level course instead of something equivalent to the first course.

Wish I had known this earlier, I had thought they average the two grades together.
