I took AP calculus senior year in highschool, although did not take the AP exam. I do understand the principles to calculus, do I need it to get into dental schools like UB, UCLA, UCSF?? Hate calculus, my dentist said it was pointless and that stats is a lot more beneficial

If it's not a requirement for those schools then you don't have to take it. You can check the school's website to look at their specific requirements.

Meh, never took real Calculus. If a school requires it, you can take it after you know that you got in. If your major doesn't require it, don't do it.

Each school has their own additional requirements past:

  • 8 hours Biology with lab
  • 8 hours Physics
  • 8 hours English
  • 8 hours General Chemistry with lab
  • 8 hours Organic Chemistry with lab

Some require calculus and/or stats. If you want to limit your schools, don't take it. Otherwise, you can plan to take it 2nd semester senior year and if you get into a school that doesn't require it, drop it.

Calc 1 is not that bad. I would definitely say knowing at least basic calculus really helps when you take physics.

I don't think it's a prerequisite for dental schools, but double check that for the ones you are interested in. But Physics is a pre-req and Calculus is a pre-req for Physics, at least for my school it is.

Isn't Calculus a pre-req for Harvard Dental? Would a single 4 credit calculus course satisfy this requirement because on Harvard Dental it says they require 6 credit hours and I reallyyyy don't wanna take Calc 2

A handful of schools require calculus and a few more require "math". Some require both calc and stats but others just say "math" but like you said, taking physics without a college based calc class is going to be difficult.

Oh okay! From the schools I'm looking into which were like 15 of them didn't require math but is implied since you have to take Physics. Like I said, make sure to check the prereqs for the specific dental schools you are interested in because they can vary. For some, you need extra biology classes or psychology. For Harvard dental, it seems you do have to take two classes since its 6 credit hours, not 4 credit hours.

Calculus is not a prereq for any of those schools. Some schools do require it; Stony Brook is an example. Everyone that said you can take it after getting accepted is correct. It just has to be before matriculation.

Look into the types of Physics courses offered at your school. Algebra-based Physics with lab is acceptable and may not require calculus (this was the case at my school).
