Could anyone comment on some the Cali or Texas programs? I know there have been some previous discussions about West Houston/Kingwood. What about UT in San Antonio? Others?
Any comments on Scripps or other top Cali programs?

If memory serves, Dr. Javier Lafontaine now runs the UTHSC San Antonio. He is a very intelligent, compassionate doctor and is a wonderful teacher and mentor as well.

Dr. Javier Lafontaine is now at Scott and White. All the Texas programs are good. They all have pluses and minuses and a emphasis on different areas of podiatry. St Joseph just started and hence no track record. It depends upon what you are looking for in a residency.

Kaisers have a nice reputation... esp Kaiser-SF Bay Area, which has many great attendings and a legit claim as possibly the best in the country - definitely top 5.

Just curious - Is there a risk to attending a *new* residency program?

Not necessarily a risk or benefit. New means no track record. We do not know how graduates do on board qualification, job placement, activity in organizations within the profession, etc. What do their surgical numbers look like? Is it financially stable? What is the feedback from past residents?

In 3-6 years some/all of those may be answered but until then they are unknowns.

Doesn't Dr. Mendicino run a residency program in Texas??? I'm confident if he is still involved with a program, it's got to be top notch.

He certainly does and it certainly is. I believe that all the Houston programs merged under the umbrella of the Greater Texas Education Foundation (GTEF), and he still heads the programs up. Great program and certainly a great mentor, physician/surgeon and all around amazing guy. He has probably contributed more to Podiatric Education in general than any single practitioner at this point. And if I haven't mentioned it already he is a genuine guy with a genuine concern for the profession.

Sounds like you're in love....or you used to date.😍
