Happy Veteran's day!

I am a senior at one of the UCs, and am a senior with not good gpa in commulative and sci.

I am looking for california community colleges in Southern California area that has genetics class that I can retake during fall or spring semester.

I am planning retaking ochem and gen bio at 4 year university.

I am trying to utilize AACOMAS grade replacement policy so I can do my best to get into an D.O school!

I am also wondering if do community colleges offer Elementary Biochemistry course as well?

So I am from quarter system university. if I want to retake biology course at a community college which is semester system, how does that work? I need first two quarters of biology retake as I did well on the third one. Can I just take one semester at a CC biology? or will I have to take both?

I took some JC courses in California a few years back. I think most of them offered biochem and all of them offer ochem. I suspect but am not sure that they offer genetics as well. You are allowed to just take one semester of biology; that's what I did. I just took the first semester of intro biology. I'm not sure if you can take the second without taking the first, however. If you take a semester course that corresponds with a quarter course you took at a UC, then the semester course can override the grade from the quarter course unless the adjusted credits from the quarter course are greater than the semester credits from the semester course.

If you have never taken courses at a JC before, be prepared to compete for spots in premed science courses. Make sure you register as early as possible. Also, it may be easier to sneak into a course if there is no registration wait list. I just clicked refresh on the sign up page several hours a day until a spot in my desired ochem course opened up. After your first semester, it is generally easier to get spots since you can register earlier.

What courses CCs offer vary by the school. My CC does not offer biochemistry, for example. Just take a look at the course schedule for whatever school(s) you're planning to take courses at.

As for grade replacement, Google the AACOMAS grade replacement policy. They calculate course hours by semester hours, and they explain how to translate quarter hours into semester hours. As long as your retake (semester) hours are higher than your original (semester) hours, the new grade will be considered valid. This is specifically dependent on the courses you have taken and will take.

It's a 1 to 1 replacement. One semester replaces one quarter. The semester grade has a lot more weight due to conversions.

Anything above a 3.0 is good enough to apply. Make sure you destroy these cc classes because the cc stigma still exists.

ooooh I see I see... darn... okay I'm planning trying to bring my gpa up to 3.2 or 3.3 to make sure I don't get pre screened. What would you say gpa needed for like WesternU and Touro CA?

Elac (east LA city college) in Monterey Park, CA has genetics that you can take. Its semester units tho.


I have about 8 interviews all across the nation and have been accepted into 2 schools already.

I transferred from a community college into a UC and after graduation I returned to a CC to take more classes to bolster my med school app (A&P and nutrition) so I have a lot of CC class units under my belt. In my opinion, the CC stigma has not affected me, but maybe I'm just an isolated incident.

Oh that sounds good! I just need to find a school that can let me skip lab course for ochem because I passed them all but I did not get As in them 🙁.

What do you recommend that I do so I can get some acceptances??
Im planning on retaking elementary biochem, genetics, Gen biology one class, and one ochem. But that will not get me to like 3.3 or something. I would take additional class. What would you recommend at elac? Or mt.sac??

I found that its easier to get classes at ELAC. I transferred from Mt sac to a uc and it was really hard to get classes at Mt sac when I graduated from undergrad because there are so many students and the classes are incredibly impacted.

For those of you thinking about taking CC classes...

I took 7 pre-reqs via CC/Online. So far I have been given 4 ii's (one of which I canceled) and 1 acceptance. As other posters have mentioned, don't worry about the CC courses being a huge negative...but definitely do well in them. I had straight A's in my CC courses, which may have made a difference.

Is ELAC easy too? were you able to take like Gen bio there?? I just need to retake Gen bio 1class, Ochem 1 class, genetics, and elementary biochem.
