Hi Guys!
I am new here. Just joined. But seems like a very interesting forum for cardiology. I plan to apply in Dec 2009 for 2011 spots (PGY2). I am an IMG but permanent US resident ("green card") doing my residency in NJ. My Question is: for applying to california progs do I need a PTAL (like during residency application) ? If yes, WHEN should I start working on it?
Thanks🙂

Yes, u do need a PTAL in order to apply to California Residency Programs.I think on an average it takes 4-6 months to get a PTAL (California Letter).
Good Luck.

Thanks.
Also, can anybody tell me if its an application requirement to have the PTAL submitted during apllication in Dec 2009 for July 2011 spots in California? or can it be submitted before starting fellowship in July 2011?

I don't know the answer to your particular question, but I think you need to apply broadly for cardiology, and not just to California. It's very hard to get a spot there, and being an IMG/FMG will make it harder, partly because the programs know it takes really long to get a license in California and can be a problem for people to get them before they start the fellowship. California requires extra documentation from IMG/FMG's so I'll bet getting your license there will take longer than for the average US grad. I believe you'll need a full medical license, not just a PTAL (at least for my program they wanted us to send a copy of our California medical license for hospital credentialing that was required to start the program). Your best bet might be to check w/the individual programs you are applying to, to make sure you're doing what is necessary.

You do not need a california letter to apply for fellowships in california. I am FMG and I interviewed in california. all the best.

So now I dont have to worry burning another hole in my pocket(and brain) with that PTAL stuff before applying:luck:
