Hi, I was accepted to a pharmacy school outside of California but would want to eventually practice in California. Is it harder to get a California license if you go to an out-of-state pharmacy school? Thanks for any answers.

No, you just have to pass the NAPLEX and CPJE, both of which are easy to pass.

That being said, the CA Board of Pharmacy is the slowest and least transparent organization I have ever had to work with in my 28 years on this planet.

Just a heads up, it took them 3 months to process my application and give me authorization to take the CPJE and NAPLEX. Luckily, I scheduled my NAPLEX through NC, where I attended school and was authorized immediately.

Also, CA requires the CPJE for whatever reason, it's easier than the NAPLEX, though 50% of out-of-state students fail it. They do a quality assurance review on the exam twice a year to ensure fairness between exams. If you schedule your exam within their QA period, they potentially won't give you your results for months.

It's a long process to say the least. Also, after you pass both exams you have to send them a check for $150 and wait 10 business days for them to post your license.

Not more difficult in the sense that you are not adequately trained to pass the CPJE, but more difficult in the sense that the CA Board of Pharmacy sucks for a multitude of reasons.

Does California require certain practice hours to be obtained outside of those provided by the school?

yes i agree!!!
CA BoP takes forever to process stuff, and there's not much you can do to make the process faster.
Although my primary state wasn't CA, meaning i was able to get ATT faster, it still took about 4 months till i got licensed in CA (did score transfer to CA).

It depends on how many were required by the school.

CA requires 1500 hours. If school only requires 500 or 1000 (as in some states), then yes. Otherwise, there's a breakdown of hours required. 900 in a pharmacy, 600 must be "substantially related to pharmacy" though not necessarily in the pharmacy itself (clinical pharmacy on the hospital floor, etc) If your school does not provide these experiences, or they're not documented to the satisfaction of CA BOP, you may be required to do additional hours. Be very meticulous in documenting your hours so they can be verified by the BOP.

Make sure your application is complete the way the CA Board wants it. You can email them early to make sure you do it right; otherwise you'll get a deficiency letter which delays the process!!

Turn in your application as soon as you can after you graduate then you should have no problem. I have friends who went to out-of-state schools and graduated end of May. Done with NAPLEX and CPJE in July & got licensed in August.
