..I was just curious to know something. If i wish to go to CSUSB for my undergrad, would that affect my chances of accpetance into dental school? the reason i ask is bevause its not a prestigious school AT ALL. I was wondering if dental school look at, and care about your undergrad univeristy you attend?

Thanks so much once again!

The answer is no. School won't matter unless you go to a community college. The most important factor are your grades and DAT.

True, true. I go to Cal State Northridge and they took me.

I agree.

But If you really have to go to community college, just take gen eds and save any dental prereqs after you transfer to a 4 year.

Thanks.

I do go to community college currently. It does make sense to only take my ge's then transfer to work on my major req's. But most universities require you to complete so many major courses, as well as all ge's before they will accept you.

So im in a pickle here!

Major in something else and when you transfer switch the major to sciences.

That doesnt make much sense. Im only fullfilling some lower division reps anyways.

Do you have to take some of the predent courses at the CC?

Prereqs for most dental schools are lower division classes as well.

For instance, most schools require

-A year of Gen Chem (lower division)
-A year of Gen Bio (lower division)
-A year of Physics (lower division)
-A year/or a semester of English (lower division)
-A year of Orgo (Either lower or upper division, depending on your universities. Here in Davis we offer 2 series of orgo, one lower division and one upper division.)

The general idea is that schools might accept your prereqs taken at a CC to a certain degree, but they would much rather prefer you take thos courses again if possible at a 4 year.

I know 4 CSUSB grads who are students at LLUSD. CSUSB may not be prestigious in the truest sense of the word, but those who are familiar with it know that we have good professors, especially in Biology.

You're not doing yourself a disservice by going to CSUSB. Trust me, you'll see.

I understand now.

lemoncurry, im sure its a great school although not prestigious. My sister just graduated from there, and is now teaching. I just want to do what is best for myself.

I have taken all except one (biochemistry) pre-req class at a JC, will that have a major affect on my app? its a shame because the science department at the JC i went to is very good. Students who transfered to berkley, davis, ucla have stated that those schools are way easier.

Thanks.

For nearly all d-schools, you won't be rejected just for taking some prereqs at a CC. There's many threads here on this, check them out. From personal experience, I did G-chem, english, calculus, physics, and all lower division bio at a CC. I was accepted to multiple schools, and several were the more competitive ones. The CC will only hurt you if 1) You try to get into d-school b/f you have your degree, or 2) Your GPA at the 4 yr school you'll transfer to stinks. There are a few d-schools that say no prereqs at a CC (Tufts?) but they're a small minority.

kblake, you can go to the most prestigious school in the country, but if it doesn't help your DAT score, what good does it do you? I'm proud of about 90% of my DAT scores, and it is due in no small part to the excellent professors at CSUSB.

Wonderful comments!

Ive read that CC credit is limited to so much credit at many dental schools. I will be getting my BA also. I just was wondering about the prestige or reputation of schools, and how it afects admission; if in any way.
