Calling FL Schools to Ask For an Interview

I'm going to be in South Florida from Feb 18th to Feb 25th, and also from March 27 to April 7th. Do you guys think I should call U Miami, and possibly UF and USF, to schedule interviews for that time, even though I have heard nothing from them since completion?

Do you think this would speed up a rejection? I don't want to do that.

Has anyone done it with FL schools and had it worked?

What are your stats if you dont mind me asking? U. of Miami is extremely competitive for out of staters and from my understanding if you haven't heard yet from them, its probably not a good sign. But good luck to you, you never know. iI will keep my fingers crossed for you.

I am a Florida resident, and I submitted my scondary on Nove 5, and my check was ccancelled on Dec 5. I called to check last month and it is under review.

I have a 27 P on the MCAT (9,9,9)
My GPA is 3.67, 3.51 Science, and 3.85 for the otherclasses
I am a double major in Spanish and Latin American Studies
I have volunteered for 100 hours in a free clinic for migrant farmworkers and spoke Spanish the whole time (I'm not a native speaker)
I also have other good ECs

So what's the deal with them? My application is perfect for Miami! (I guess except for the MCAT scores)

I would appreciate any input

oh the fact you are a FL resident is good. I was looking at the stats for them and it appears they are a lot more tolerant of a lower GPA and MCAT than out of staters. If you ask me I think you make a great applicant, unfortunately I have zero say. But based on a list of matriculants from my school that were residents of FL, your numbers should be fine. maybe try calling without actually saying who you are..."hi, I am an applicant to your school and I am going to be in the area on these dates. I haven't been invited for an interview yet, but I was wondering if I could schedule an interview for those times because..."
Ok, word that however you want, but something along those lines. If they say no, you can't do that, well, then they don't know who you are and it doesn't matter. if they say yes, then yay!

Based on the things I have heard through friends, not a good idea to try to schedule any interview. I would suggest just calling them up to see your status on things. We hold no power here, and I think being assertive/aggressive considering all the other applicants that the ad coms has to deal with would not work in your favor. Just my humble opinion.

Ok, perhaps I can help. I've already been accepted to UMiami this year, and I've interviewed at UFlorida. You should go ahead and call both admissions offices and ask *really really politely* if they can interview you. Both admissions offices are really friendly, so they probably won't reject you just for asking.
Besides, it's getting late in the game, so it's worth a try. Hope that helps.

Don't let your MCAT's deter you...I was offered an interview with Miami and also have a 27. It seems like some people just get lost in the pile...I wonder if they're just random in their pickings some time. Make them notice you and good luck.

I recently sent them my updated transcripts..maybe they'll notice me form the new letter and give me an inteview b/c of my good grades form last semester

I think you should go for it, Foxy. And tell UF to interview me while you're at it! :wink: Robyn is pretty awesome, so you shouldn't get much flack from her for trying. I don't know about Miami, though. When my application was still active, they were pretty rude to me.

UF must be trying something new this year. I wish I knew what they were up to. Last year's stats were amazing, but at least they interviewed us mere mortals. This year... SHEESH!

yeah I know swampman...it's like what they did for undergrad 4 years ago....my high school valedictorian was wait listed at first, and he was a genius and a really nice person

Swampman: I've heard from the horse's mouth that the selection's committee for UF is drastically reducing its number of interviews this year (apparently to time consuming and costly). In exchange, we get ignored.

Doctor Foxy: My app. was complete by the beginning of September and was offered an interview in November.

OH YEAH! Forgot to mention! Tomorrow I get my USF verdict. It's great that Mr. Larkin tells you when he's going to call with a decision. This way, you don't have to camp by the mailbox.

You should also call and speak with Mr. Larkin, Foxy. He's really nice. DON'T STAY ON THE PHONE TOO LONG, though. He's gotta call me with the decision! :wink: 😀

read any other threads about people calling and asking for/about interviews that 'happened to be in the area'? there's been LOTS of success. Not sure if they are more inclined to post these things, or because they had awesome stats, or cause it was early in the season, but I also agree it's worth a shot. Can't imagine being rejected for showing true interest in a school. Just doesn't add up if you ask me.

OK I just called U Miami and they said my application has been reviewed and a decision about an interview has not been made yet. I then desprerately proceeded to tell her that I would be in FL next week, and of course she said I cannot schedule an interview without being invited. Perhaps you should try to inform someone higher up that you will be in FL. Those secretaries could give a rat's a$$, though they should. I never did like communicating with UM's admissions office. Perhaps you should send a nice email to the coordinator (not the secretaries) letting him/her know that you live in MA and outline the cost an aditional trip would require. Just an idea....
