I will be starting my residency at Camp Pendleton this June and I was wondering if any one stationed there before. I am looking off base housing near the base in the following locations: Oceanside, Carlsbad and Temecula. San Diego will be nice but it is going to be a long commute. Please let me know if you know the area and have any recommendation.

Thank you.

Thank you so much Gastrapathy! Encinitas may be farther like San Diego, but I will visit it this weekend. By the way, may I ask why you didn't like Temecula and Oceanside? Thank you again.

Carlsbad has some nice areas...and it shouldn't be a horrible drive.

Agree with the above, Carlsbad is where you want to live. Traffic in SoCal sucks more than the hookers at the donkey show.
I wouldn't recommend south of Encinitas. There are lovely coastal towns there with their own special appeal, but the commute will start to drag on you.

A single guy at 29 Palms would make for a loooong tour. Unless you're into marine chicks. Lol.

It's a shame Keflavik was closed. That was one of the most diverse tours I had. Plenty of interesting history, geology, and the native blond-hair, blue-eyed females were everywhere, along with folks from NATO allies during ASW exercises.

Oceanside isn't that bad. If you live between the 76 and the 78 there are some nice little neighborhoods in rancho del oro around college avenue. Sure, Encinitas and Carlsbad are nicer, but they are a lot more expensive in rent. Enjoy!

Do not live in Temecula. It is a very long drive with heavy traffic coming through the Fallbrook gate. Carlsbad is fine as the hospital is now close to the main gate and the 5. Rent is just quite a bit more in Carlsbad than it is in Oceanside. But, you've also got Pizza Port in Carlsbad... Miss that place.
