Can a FM doc do an IM LOR if they had you on an inpatient rotation?

Hey everyone,

I'm nearing the end of my third year of med school and am trying to get some LORs together. I want to go into neurology, and most programs require 2 neuro LOR and 1 IM LOR. Two of my internal medicine rotations were done with Family Med residents and attendings on the inpatient team. Does a letter of recommendation from a Family Med attending count as IM if they saw you on an inpatient rotation? Can I assign the letter to IM as the specialty on ERAS?

Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I'm doing third year at a site with a family medicine residency and they have us only working with the FM docs during IM. Just one story, but I know a student who is applying IM, got a LOR from a FM doc who was with her on inpatient, and is using that as an IM rec. Hope that helps!

Yeah that's fine. It's not frowned upon in any way. Just make sure it doesn't say 'interested in IM' or something against FM if using it for Family. You'll do a bunch of inpatient for most residency types anyway and it's good to note that you were interested and did well in that setting.
