My friends believe that by taking the USMLE as a DO medical student, you can become a MD. Or that a DO can become a MD by taking some test. Is that true?

of course not, they can, however, match into MD residencies by taking the USMLE

No. You cannot become MD by taking USMLE if you are a DO student.

Degrees, DO or MD are given by schools not board exams. If a person went to allopathic school, the school will give him MD, if he went to DO school, the school will give him DO.

As a DO student, taking USMLE makes you eligible to apply to ACME (MD) residencies inaddition to AOA (DO) residencies. This way, a person has two shots or backup.

PS: Some ACGME residencies accept DO students even without taking USMLE .. i.e just with your COMLEX scores

I'd stop listening to such friends especially regarding medical school matters. MD students take usmle, DO students will take COMLEX but most i think will also attempt the usmle in order to get into md residencies.

DO students can match into MD residencies even with comlex. MD students however cannot match into any DO residencies since, they did not go to a DO school for the extra OMM

DO students can match into MD residencies even with only comlex. MD students however cannot match into any DO residencies since, they did not go to a DO school for the extra OMM

hey, finally a pre-med with his head and his ass wired together. this is correct.

The OP's question has been answered, but this response struck a nerve with me.

When a patient asks you, "Will my son get autism from this vaccine?", will you respond with some smart-ass, denigrating response like the one above? Or will you explain that all scientific data has ruled out any possibility that vaccines cause autism?

Not everyone is as smart as you. Not everyone is as wonderful at searching previous threads as you. There are a lot of people who get bad advice. When you know the answer to a question, it is your job as the teacher (the informed) to educate the student (the uninformed), not to berate and belittle.

I don't mean to offend, and I personally find the OP's question ludicrous, but he/she is simply uninformed and unschooled in the difference between licensing and degrees; he/she is not an idiot.

"...While deliberations concerning the relations between organized biomedicine and organized osteopathic medicine were taking place at the national level of the AMA, some state societies acted independently on this matter. During the 1950's , the California Medical Association and the California Osteopathic Association discussed the possibility of a merger, and in 1961 the former in essence absorbed the latter. The two organizations agreed to: 1) convert the Los Angeles College of Osteopathy into a biomedical college, 2) arrange for the converted medical school to issue M.D. degrees to California D.O.'s who held an unlimited California license to practice medicine, 3) create a temporary body for the transformed D.O.s until "they become absorbed into the regular county medical societies," and 4) lobby to prevent future licensing of D.O.s and to terminate the authroity of the Board of Osteopathic Examiners, which would regulate only the few remaining D.Os (Blackstone 1977: 418-19). As a result of the absorption, the Los Angeles College of Osteopathy became the University of California, Irvine, College of Medicine, and most of the osteopathic hospitals in the state were converted to biomedical ones."

- Hans Baer, Biomedicine and Alternative Healing Systems in America, p. 57

To my knowledge, no other state Osteopathic body has been dissolved since. Some tried afterward, but none followed through Not too many people know that little diddy about Cali, MD, JD, or DO. So, one could say you could swap degrees at one time. Those roarin' twentiers.

I knew this all along because i research it up. However, my friends do not believe me. They think that it is possible you can get a MD from taking a test. After a heated debate, I posted this thread to prove my point. Thank you for your reply!

I have a part of my brain that allows me to give different responses, depending on the situation I'm in. I've exercised it to such a great degree that I'm now able to respond to someone on the internet in one manner while being able to respond to the parents of an autistic child in an entirely different manner. It's an awesome skill. I'd recommend developing it.

Like they would ever want to?:laugh::laugh:

Well who doesn't like to get matched. I think this past year was the worst match for us grads in a long long time. I'm sure a lot of MD graduates who weren't as fortunate to match would've liked to have the chance to apply to AOA residencies as well. As a DO student in the near future, I will certainly have both options along with CARMS (if i think about applying to canada) available to me and my opinion is that if a person is qualified, done the right things, worked hard and is passionate about a certain field she/he should have all the chances to match.

Again, like all my posts this is my personal opinion. Being unmatched after working your tail off for 4 years is a hard pill to swallow and I hope no one goes through it. Sadly, a lot of DO and MD students went through it this year.

thanks sideways 🙂

I credit my proper pre-med wiring to the posts of other knowledgeable members of SDN 👍

Why would they not? There are so many students wanting to do Dermatology and a DO residency would be a new chance for a student out there. I also met a doctor that told me the only thing he laments of an MD is not learning OMM.

I think there are some carribbean schools that have like a year long or semester long course to switch from DO to MD (well, I guess it would be just adding the MD).

I can't believe anyone would want to do that though. Like, ever.

I've met someone who thought this was possible...3 months after starting classes at a DO program :smack:

Get a sense of humor. You will effectively be despised by everyone in your class except for the one other person that nobody wants to deal with because they are uptight and just no fun. It is a friggin message board. Don't try to teach us morals by presenting little scenarios that are completely different. We all joke around and we all have our serious face when need be. Learn to distinguish between them and laugh.

Also, I've been presented the whole vaccine causes autism statement numerous times by patients. A large chunk of them essentially plug their ears and ignore you and everyone else regardless of the evidence provided. Sadly, real patients don't pan out with the feel good methods they teach you during your first year of med school.

I'm pretty sure it's possible. I was reading that if you're military vet DO student and you to take your USMLE on a 5th Thursday of the month during a leap year that you could fill out some form and get this arranged. I dunno... someone should Google it.

I always thought it was the SATs that you have to take to become MD from a DO, thanks for clarifying that up for me

Can I become your dad by ****ing your mom?

I wish we could be friends in real (non-interweb) life ...

Also, as a funny aside. Does anyone else here remember DOtoMD.com? It was a 'school' in the Caribbean that would grant DOs an MD if they took some online classes or something. I remember there was some radio DJ in Chicago who hosted like a medical based program who was a DO, did that program, and came under some heat for putting strictly MD after his name.

Needless to say ... the program doesn't exist anymore (for the time being).

I came back on sdn after a while and I'm glad I read this comment!!!!! Lmaoo this has to be the funniest thing ever written on this site. No one can top this!! No one, not even you Jagger

I find it interesting that sideway's crude, immature, middle-school mentality response to the OP has elicited such overwhelming approval from pre-DOs and DO students in this thread. A sad commentary on the maturity level of those who joined in to nod approvingly. Pathetic.

I'm pretty sure you know this kind of question has been asked multiple times. Besides if you use the search bar or even if you google the question your going to get your answer as "no". Many of us heard this question to the point where we know whats it going to lead to and I guess it's becoming amusing after a while. Were not trying to hurt anyones feelings here but using sarcasm and such pretty much gets the point across. You might call it immature but it's all in good fun. If you really want to know how many times this topic has been discussed just search it up.

So, if a poster has the misfortune to pose a question that has been answered a thousand times before, it is perfectly acceptable to respond by talking about f**king his mother. Do I have that right?

Everyone in this thread understands what you are saying ... but it's just SDN. The OP posts a dumb question, people are sarcastic, others chastise, the OP calls the joking member a jerk, he/she then sticks around SDN for 2-5 years, learns the ropes, and suddenly finds the karmic justice in bashing on the 20th 'Can a DO prescribe Tylenol in Missouri?' thread of the day. You can try to fight it if you want, but keep in mind that this place is hardly an accurate reflection of ... well, anything, and it's a bit harsh to pretend like people would act this way in a place that wasn't a breeding ground for sarcasm, captioned pictures of cats, and mindless bickering. Docs, pre-docs, etc, are humans too.

I think most people don't approve of it but still find it hilarious. It's kind of like a racist joke. It's evil, personally I wouldn't say it, but something being funny is an involuntary act.

I just want to say I know a MD who went to a DO residency because the spot was open and it was going to go to waste,so he got the spot in Michigan. My father and cousin told me they do know a couple of MDs who went through a DO residency. All of these people were FMGs. Wonder how often this happens.

Lighten up buddy. Go grab yourself a beer, meet up with some buddies and try this thing most of us call joking around. Its what makes people well-rounded and eventually good doctors

Deep thoughts. I'm sure your girlfriend is grateful you took some time away from disappointing her to post them.

I'm tempted to respond by saying that your mother finds me to be the man your father never was. But I'll resist that temptation since that would be stooping to your level, wouldn't it?

My thought are actually not deep at all. But, I guess anything above a gutter-level mentality challenges your cognitive abilities.

Thanks for taking the time to again show that you are an immature ass. 👍

That is such a silly notion. The DO vs MD issue is moot in the USA. I know some people going overseas anyway because they want the MD. I would not advise it to anyone. The DO is a far better route than a foreign medical school.

Ask they how they feel in four years when they 'want the residency.'

Why does all of that sound vaguely familiar? Stop back when you have an original thought.

Sideways 4 points...haters combining for 2, maybe 1. Keep the game rolling gentlemen.
