Hi future docs and happy graduates
I'm a pre dental student in Texas . I just transferred into a university from a community collge 2 semesters ago . My GPA is 3.33 and I'm not happy with it I wanted it to be at 3.8 and I feel the school I'm going to isn't helping me grasp anything so I wanted to take all my courses like o chem 2 , and lab physics and microbiology all online I found a university that's offering them online for spring . My concern was if I get a better grade here can I just continue online courses and just use this as my university of applying to a dental school , do dental school in Texas and other states look at only one GPA or all combined or online courses are looked bad upon ..

Thanks

Dental schools can see all GPAs both cumulative and individual. They will request that you submit official transcripts from every institution from which you've earned credit.

As far as using an online school to take your big pre-reqs, I would advise against it. With online courses I think the temptation to become complacent and skid by is more prominent than in an actual classroom. I'm not saying that it's impossible or anything, but I've never heard of it done before and never even thought of it myself. Take this for whatever you want. It's just my opinion on the issue. Best of luck.

Online classes won't work. Especially for the pre reqs

Thanks guys for the honest replies.
Appreciate it .

I was hopping if that was the case then I can honestly get a tutor who I understand then all the ridiculous prof we have in universities theses days , all they do is teacher their own way and take exams from online off others who have taught well.and according to the test. Smh

So when I apply my GPA will be 3.33 I wanted to take this online course and Oregon university online and get a 4.0 apply with that

Is that good or no..?

no...only a four year institution...only courses that are on campus...no online courses for pre-reqs

Yes you "can" take them online, but when you realize that none of the schools accept them you'll find yourself in the classroom retaking them. Maybe they should offer a dental school curriculum online lol

This is a big "Depends" question. I know at my undergrad uni that even if you take a class online it does not show up as "online" on your transcript. So you could take half your classes online and the dental school would never know.

I have had several friends get in to various d-schools having taken physics and anatomy online.

But if you are talking about an "online only" school... the answer is a big no!!

Yeah I know like devry and Phoenix I would never, this is a course at Oregon state university and that's true it never shows online .

what about courses that require a proctored exam so it is not completly online

do not take pre reqs online. it looks pretty bad.

if your transcript indicates that the course is online, i.e. something like "human anatomy: online" or something, do not do it.

You have to report all your classes from all the schools you attended on AADSAS.

If you take the course online, adcoms are going to see that after transferring to your university from community college, you couldn't hack the harder courses so you ran off to an easier university where you did better.

Instead of blaming your professors, why don't you bunker down, work harder, and succeed at your home school? Everyone here has had to deal with difficult, unfair, and unreasonable professors.

Another thing to consider is that AADSAS has an "online" option under the drop-down menu when you're listing your classes. I would imagine that if you didn't select that and your class was, in fact, online, it could be considered falsified information. Now, if someone who took one online class didn't indicate it, he might be able to pass it off as a mistake. But I wouldn't mess around with that sort of thing.

I doubt you can do a dissection online or a chemical experiment!! lol, I never heard of premed courses taken online..What school is offering pre-med courses online?

I know my local CC offers an online anatomy class, including the lab. You have to buy a cat dissection kit and dissect the preserved cat at home. I assume you take pictures of it or something to show your progress. I've also heard of an online chemistry class where everything is done virtually (like a computer game, almost). It all seems weird to me, I agree. Definitely not the same as hands-on lab work.

This pretty much. At my 4 year universuty, online classes are not designated as such and thus dental schools would never know which classes are online or not. I've taken a few non pre req courses online and they are listed on my transcript exactly how the in class section would be.

lol..amazing!! maybe in DS we will be able to dissect humans and pull teeth online ...lol..who knows what the future is? btw I took 2 classes online but were: Enviromental policies and American Dissability Act ( i was forced to take those by the school in order to fulfill requirements) and to the OP : On my transcript it shows as a Regular class( it doesn't say it was online).. I also took a biology class that was given in SPanish and doesn't say it in my transcript. But again: I agree with everyone else.. Do not take pre-req online

Don't you think the Texas dental schools will want to know why you took classes through OSU? Most states are looking to educate residents who have deep roots to their community and won't move away. Even if the dental schools in Texas think you took your classes on site in Oregon, they might fear that you would move out of state after dental school and not admit you. If you could take the classes online from a school in Texas, you might be able to get away with it.

I was just about to say this! If you're registered in one state, and are concurrently taking classes in another state, I'm assuming it'll automatically be assumed as online. Maybe you can try to get the tutors for the in-person classes at your university?
