I was wondering if it is possible for IMG's to do externships in the US after graduation so that they can gain US clinical experience? Or are observerships the only thing available?

Because of the issues involving licensure and medical liability, physician graduates are barred from clinical rotations in the strictest sense.

Does this mean that observerships are also out?

What if you're a permanent resident/citizen, but attending medschool abroad? And how can Caribbean medstudents do electives in the US?

Students can do electives, provided the school allows non-US students to do so. Your citizenship is not the issue. The OP asked about *graduates*.

Caribbean medical students come to the US for their final 2 years in an educational agreement with affiliated programs.

So hold on. I'm allowed to do clinical rotation in US during my final year of medical school in India? I'm a US citizen.

And is there is difference between electives and clinical rotations? Because I've been seeing both separately many times.

Thanks! 🙂

Clinical Rotation just refers to any rotation in a clinical patient setting. These are typically during the final two years of medical school.

Students complete Core Rotations and other required rotations such as Sub-Is. Electives are used to allow students to experience other areas of medicine outside of the cores (ie, Radiology, Anesthesiology) or to explore a subspecialty or specialty in more depth.

Foreign students without school affiliations in the US are not generally allowed to take Core Electives int he US and are limited to electives.

As a medical student in India you may be eligible for electives in the US, provided you meet US program requirements (ie, many schools do not take students from non LCME schools). Your citizenship is irrelevant.
