Just wondering who is going to be there, Can we get to know each other a little before the report date? Etc. It would be cool to know who you are and share any info that is specific to the 08 class. (That is not on the OBC/OIC/COT sticky, I mean.) Just AMEDD HPSP USUHS OBLC.

I'm in...

here are some links

http://www.cs.amedd.army.mil/obc/

http://www.cs.amedd.army.mil/187medbn/alpha/

the latter has a FY08 class schedule (in excel format). Not sure fully how to interpret it in reagards to specific tracks, but based on my current residency schedule (grad jun 30, 2008) I am guessing that I would start in mid july (july 22 if i remember correctly) and go through at least mid sept.

Can't seem to get too many answers from the folks on here re: pay but maybe a dedicated thread may help

Awesome! I have no idea how you found the second one, but I am an internet idiot. The first one has been around a while and looks like my 11 year old and his friends did it.

Edit--I was totally wrong a minute ago, because I read it again. The HPSP/USUHS class starts on 08JUN08. I am not sure, but this might mean you will have a problem getting there if you can't get out of school until 30JUN. I would get on your recruiters butt right now because they are slow and take months to give you a straight answer.

Anyway, we have had a few posts back and forth, huskydoc, but it's good to meet you. I'm Scott, prior service and I am a 73B--Clinical Psychologist.

As far as pay, there are quite a few threads sprinkled everywhere about how it works as OBLC. You may be right about a dedicated one.

As far as I know, its Base Pay+BAH+BAS+whatever travel pay they give you. Not sure how the travel pay would work other than to and from Ft. Sam, (inluding meals) + per diem rate for billeting. Escpecially if you are getting BAH and BAS. If you have dependents it will be more money.

I'll be there, along with several of my classmates who were unable to go before school started (we have no summers). Interestingly enough, while that website shows the dates for OBLC this summer, you still cannot request it through MODS.

Well my situation is a bit different as I graduated med school 4 years ago (2004) and am civilian deferred for residency training.

So I cannot start OBLC until July 1 at the earliest. Plus lucky me I get to take my specialty board exam during my time at OBLC...should be fun trying to focus and study!

I will keep searching for pay and moving answers, but its slow going.

I would like to join in. I'm not sure yet if I'll be in the summer course but it is the one I'm shooting for. I may be able to be of some help. I spent three years on active duty right out of residency (1993-1997) and five years in the Army National Guard (ARNG) as a physician. I went throught the old OBC. I'm getting back into the ARNG and will need to go to OBLC.

I will be there also. Graduated 2004, civilian deferred pathology resident. I am also interested in pay and when do we get orders?

I suspect the orders thing depends. For instance, in my case, I am waiting for the clinical psychology PhD internship match. I understand MD's have already heard back as to where they are going, but we have to wait for APPIC and NMS. Match day is 22FEB. After that, we know where we will be for internship and then the orders are supposed to be cut shortly thereafter. I would think you guys can get yours ASAP.

I just applied for OBC for this summer. As a veterinary student, I'll be lower priority, but I'm really hoping to get it done. For some reason my class dates on the milmed website are 6/15-7/28. I noticed the HPSP class is supposed to be 6/8 -7/18, which is odd because I'm considered HPSP. The only class that coordinates with my dates on that excel spreadsheet is 6-8-C22, CCCRC (and I have no idea what this means). Is there anyone that can shed some light on this? I'm going to ask my recruiter about it, but I won't be able to do so until Tuesday.

My dates also show as 6/15-7/28. I think the Excel spreadsheet is old and doesn't reflect the most current schedule.

Phew, thanks. That makes me feel better. I'm really excited to meet more people in the program! I'm meeting with an Army Veterinarian this weekend, and he'll be telling me more about his experience. Reading these boards had me scared at first, but the veterinary program seems to be quite different. I hope to see some of you guys this summer. :)

Well, I hope you guys keep this thread going, even though I started it. When I first thought of the idea, I was under the impression that ALL HPSPers would be in the same class. The A Co website suggests that, but it is not true. Turns out, the one most of you are writing about is for MDs and DVMs. The class for MSC officers (like clinical psychologists) is later in the summer. It starts on 06AUG. Keep it going though, but I don't think I will see any of you!

Ahh, now everything makes sense.

Hey guys, I just got accepted to USUHS and will be joining you all this summer. I guess its in Texas, I still need to get a medical waiver but I should be in this June. See you all there.

That's news to me. How long does it run for MSC officers?

It's about 2 1/2 months. (10 weeks, I think). What has been happening in the past (last couple of cycles) is the clinpsych PhDs go to OBLC in August en route to internship which they begin around October time frame. In this scenario, the OBLC time is not "ADT" but rather the begining of AD with a smooth transition to their first PCS. Basically, you have no income from the Army from about 15JUN (Last HPSP stipend day) to the start of OBLC, which sucks if you need the money because you have none for about a month and a half.

How in the world did you get that date? It isn't listed anywhere I can find - even the aforementioned Excel spreadsheet. Even my recruiter doesn't know! Just wanting all the info, I'm a PsyD to be who is waiting on match day...

My ADT status page now says coordinator approved. That mean I'm in? I certainly hope so because I've passed up some awesome summer job opportunities for this. I'm really excited to go (though the working out needs to start immediately....especially the pushups, I suck at those). Maybe I'll see some of you there!

Almost certainly....mine still says "Application Submitted" :(.

Wait...You have to apply? My recruiter just said that he would take care of it. I haven't been commissioned yet (two more weeks) because I'm not old enough, but I have already arranged my summer to go to this course.

A quick question for anyone who may know. Do prior service officers who have already completed an army OBC need to go through the AMEDD OBC again or is their a process for obtaining a waiver?

Also, can OBC be deferred until after medical school? Or does it have to be completed prior to graduating?

For the Army OBC people this summer, I'm guessing we need to bring the entire packing list? Can someone confirm that before spend that much money?

I went last summer. You don't need to bring the whole packing list. I went with 2 sets of ACUS but bought a third while down there b/c they get pretty dirty in the field. A camel-back will make your life a lot easier, I would buy one. You don't need the long track pants and long sleeve workout suit because it is too hot in Texas. Try to get you name tapes ahead of time (they say get 3 but i only have two, thats really all you need). You can get them at Ft. Sam but it is a little bit of a hassle, and most people had them upon arrival. You should get the amount of socks and t-shirts they recommend. Try to wear your boots a little bit before you go down to break them in. I didn't have a problem but if your feet are soft you will get blisters. If the money is a concern, you can bring a copy or your orders to wherever you get your uniforms on a base and get a military star card. this is a credit card with a terrible interest rate you can use at the PX( i wouldn't use it), but it also has a $500 limit uniform account that is zero interest forever. It was pretty useful for me. Also, about 2 weeks before you go, if you are HPSP (not USUHS) they send you a $1000 pay advance. I hope this was helpful for you.

OBC was easy, make sure to pass the PFT,, I passed it and had PT/or had to do a battalion run a total of 4 times while I was there, and got to participate in the hand to hand combat training in the field. If you fail you have to do remedial PT in the field, which looked like it sucked, and you don't get to do the hand to hand training. San Antonio is really nice.

Did you get official orders yet for OBC this summer? How do they come, mail, email, MODS website?

Man I can't wait. I was there for 91X school (Mental Health Specialist) back in 01. Sounds like so much fun. I can max my PT test right now.

Has anyone spoken to or emailed CPT Andrews, the supposed class advisor for the 16JUN OBLC class? I have called the number on the welcome letter about 100 times and he has no voicemail, does not answer his phone and does not return emails. Which is funny, because his letter says "do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns." Classic.

I'm still waiting for my orders. This could all have been easily avoided if I had just arranged to be born earlier. As it is, I couldn't be commissioned until March so I'm still lost in the system.
Also, I'm already envious of those people not scared of the PFT test. I've always been active, but my favorite sport is heavy rapier which requires more stamina and control than brute strength. Passing the push-up part of the test will be iffy, mostly based on how they count a "real" push-up.

Yep, all set. Came by standard snail mail. Now I just have to decode the military lingo on the orders :).

Still waiting for mine. I'm pretty sure I have a spot reserved because I got an email that I tried to decode, but who knows. I applied for early entry so I'm not really in the whole system yet I guess.

If you got the email you will most likely receive the paper orders soon.

So, I've picked up almost everything from the recommended packing list so far, but I figured I'd ask if one thing in particular is really necessary. It states that if you wear glasses or contacts, that you need to bring your prescription in addition to two pairs of glasses, as the glasses they will make for us may take some time to be made. My question is, are two pairs of glasses really necessary? I've got the one pair that I use every day, and really don't want to shell out even more money to get another pair that I won't even use. Can anyone who did OBC previously, and may read this thread, chime in?

just take an old POS pair with you you never use. and if you don't bring a spare, i don't think anyone will notice. but you'll be SOL if you break the ones you bring . . .

in the field some people still wear contacts-- if you choose this route just make sure not to wear them on the day you go to the gas chamber (if they still do that).

i used one pair of specs just fine-- in fact i recommend it just to keep the branches outta your eyes when land-naving and such.

I just got the $1,000 advance today. I'm wondering when the next payment will be coming through to determine if I should save it for my July rent up at school. Can anyone enlighten me who's been through the process?

the pay gets a little wacky, you will get stipend up to the date you orders begin, so a portion of it will be prorated, then when you get there you fill out the pay paperwork and get LT pay which is nice but the $1000 advance you got comes out of that so it is not as much as it seems. However, Make sure to bring a copy of your current lease if you can and they will give you BAH based on the zip code of your lease. I had to bring 2 leases b/c my year to year lease started ended between June and July. I live in NY so it was a lot of money for me, but i didn't get it till like September b/c of a paperwork issue of some sort. if you dont have a lease you just get minimum BAH, which is a few hundred bucks i think

I don't know what most people do. I plan to go this summer (6/15-7/28), which will be the summer before my first year med school. I did get an email confirmation of my seat in the class, but I'm waiting to get into the army wide system (only have MODS access). I was comissioned in Feb, but I'm still waiting on this Ms/Mrs or that Sgt to do this, that, or the other?? Very slow process!

This process has been an administrative nightmare. I see why going after the first year would be easier, at least for paperwork and admin reasons. Since I'm trying to go before med school its like trying to speed up a machine that won't move. I'm supposed to get an update soon on my status. I hope its in the next couple of days. The clock is ticking.

I'm prior service USMC. Hope to see some of yall there.

Oh my word! It's true...such an administrative nightmare. My husband is prior enlisted, so I got used to it as an army wife....but welcome back! I jumped through hoop after hoop after hoop yesterday, finally found the person I needed to talk to, and then got yelled at for wanting something that I was told was authorized months ago. Welcome to the army =)

I'm trying to get my uniforms before going to OBC this summer. Does anyone know the best place to get name tapes? I heard it may take a few days from a base clothing and sales. Has anyone used a website like 1800nametape.com?
Thanks

My roommate from USMA says Rangerjoes is the best, 4 day turn-around. Good luck and see you down there.

I think that is where I got mine from. They were fast.
