Hey everyone, I plan on submitting my AMCAS app on Monday. Though, I would like to apply to a few MD/PhD schools. Am I able to submit my primary for MD only schools and then add MD/PhD schools and fill out the MD/PhD essay later?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you'll be able to do that. Here's what my AMCAS app says post-verification:

"After the initial submission of your application, you can only make changes to the following sections:

* Required and Alternate IDs
* Name, including Full Legal Name, Preferred Name and Alternate Names.
* Contact Information including Permanent and Preferred Mailing Addresses
* Alternate Contact Information.
* Date of Birth and Sex.
* Letters of Evaluation (only additions of up to 10 letters - and notifying AMCAS of a letter no longer being sent)
* Next MCAT
* Medical Schools may be added as long as their deadlines have not passed

You must re-certify and re-submit your application each time you make a change after initial submission. "

So you should be able to submit with your MD-only schools and later add your MD/PhD schools.

At least when I applied (wayyyy back in the day) the primary was different for MD/PhD vs. MD. There are more essays on the MD/PhD primary application so you'd need to complete those and then apply to the MD/PhD programs.

Yes, you need to fill out the two additional essays to apply MD/PhD to schools. I don't believe this is something that you can fill out later when you add schools...

This is what I was afraid of. Thanks!

I know some schools (not specifically) that allow you apply to the PHD program during your 2nd year of medical school.

I am starting to think that this would be a better option than applying MD/PhD right off the bat. I have a bit over a year of research so I am cutting it a bit close for MD/PhD admission.

If you think you might want to do this I recommend talking to the schools first. This is possible at some places, but you will want to see how many students they typically take from in-house. If the number is really low (compared to the total number of students they might take) then the odds may not be in your favor. Additionally if you want to get research experience you can do a research program the summer before and/or after MS1 and you can always take a year off (if you school allows you) and do research somewhere like the NIH. There are ways around getting a PhD if you just want the experience and/or to be competitive for residency.

Do we have a definitive answer on this? I know it is late in the season, and just finished my MD app. I guess I may have wrongly assumed I could submit my MD/PhD essays after I submitted the MD. I would like to submit to the MD only programs, which I am interested in, too, but am not sure if this means I won't be able to go back and submit to the MD/PhD programs at the same school. Can anybody give me a 100% answer?

Thanks!

It's very easy to change your AMCAS designation for an individual school from MD to MD/PhD. Just go to your medical school list and edit that entry. If you do that before you get your MD secondary you'll be fine (but remember that you have to submit 2 additional essays). Otherwise, just call the individual schools and let them know you're changing it and I'm sure you'll be good to go. Some won't even make you change it through AMCAS and will just have you send those two essays in some other way.

A couple of years ago, there were a number of posters who applied MD/PhD to schools after initially applying only to MD programs.

If I remember correctly, those posters said that when they designated their first MD/PhD school, the additional essays opened up and they were able to complete them. Several people verified this.

However, I have not personally tried it, so this information is secondhand. Also, that was a couple of years back, so I would try to find someone with more recent info before banking on it.

Also - regarding applying to the PhD program internally - ABSOLUTELY check with the individual schools before you plan on this. Some allow internal transfers but don't have room unless a current student drops out. Other schools specifically set money and PhD spots aside for MD students. You need to know which class a school fits into before you apply internally.

This is definitely still true.
