I was wondering if it was possible to defer an acceptance from the waitlist. I am on 2 waitlists right now, and while I realize there is a VERY slim chance I will get in at this point, hopefully someone can at least humor me on this one. I have searched the board, and some people you can defer from schools accepted off the waitlist, others say you cannot. Anyone have information on specific schools?

Just call them and ask. What's the worst that can happen?

Most schools have a deadline for requesting a deferral; I believe my school's was June 1. So most likely, no, you could not request a deferral if you were brought off the waitlist.

I can only speak for a handful of the US MD schools. You can defer a waitlist acceptance. Almost all schools review deferment requests on a case by case basis. It is almost easier to defer off the waitlist, especially so close to the beginning of classes.

But you should definitely clarify by calling. It will vary school to school.

Hmmm... it's possible that MY school may be an anomaly. I guess definitely call to find out.

I thought what the OP was asking if he can ask to school to accept him off the waitlist for next years class. Not to be accepted and then ask for deferral. At least that is how I interpret it.

If you are on a waitlist, you don't have an acceptance to defer. If you gain acceptance, you can request a deferral at that time even if it's after the deadline. You can't meet a deadline that has passed if you didn't have an acceptance in the first place.

Oh. If that is the case, then no. Sorry I missed it. Sounds sort of ridiculous, IMO.

Dear Adcom,

Thank you for placing me on your wait list. However, in the upcoming year, I plan on doing nothing. As such, I would kindly request you place me (preferably at the top) of next year's waitlist, when it is generated.

Thank you again for your consideration.
