Can you do cardiology from a primary care track?

M4 applying to IM. Undecided between cardiology (general/outpatient) versus primary care. I’ve heard mixed opinions on applying to cardiology fellowship from an IM primary care track. I was wondering if anyone had additional insights. Thanks!

I did a primary care IM residency. Every year there were people who applied to all of the competitive subspecialties and matched (including myself). We were typically viewed as “applicant from uni of xx” not “primary care applicant from unv of xx.”

That said, how supportive your primary care residency will be of your fellowship application is another story. My PD was awesome and supported the residents in whatever they chose to do. I have heard this is not always the case…

Primary care track only means that your rotations are set up with the intention of preparing you for a career in primary care. It doesn't mean you have a different type of IM residency that bars you from going into fellowships
