Can you send LOR requests by mail?

Is it ok to mail an attending a letter requesting a letter of recomendation from him? Do I have to actually ask the attending in person? 😕

I asked for all of my LORs by mail, since I was not rotating at the hospitals where any of the attendings were at the time. They all got back to me pretty quickly, too.
