Does anyone know about or applied to schools in Canada? I'm entertaining the idea of moving to Canada and applying to pharmacy or PA school (leaning more toward PA). Are schools less competitive or about the same as here? I appreciate any thoughts.

according to stats, canadian schools (well at least university of toronto) is much, much more competative than american schools.

for instance, about 34% that applied last year got into a pharm school. (according to pharmcas)

however, only about 16% of ppl that applied got into toronto

you may be thinking that the term 'american schools' is broader and thus, ppl have a better chance of gettin in
however, if you only take the people that applied to one school in usa, the % that got in is still around 35%.

I'm attending Memorial University School of Pharmacy. We had ~360 applicants for 40 seats, so 11.1% of people that applied got in. Honestly, it seems the Canadian Pharmacy schools are much more connected, and it seems there are less people who are 'non-chalant' about pharmacy school than compared to some of the postings regarding pharmacy school in the U.S.

That's just based on these boards though, most likely statistically biased.

What about pharmacists who move to Canada from the US? Is licensing a big hassle?

I looked into UBC (Britsh Columbia) and U of Toronto- UBC required the PCAT so I didn't apply... U of T I applied to, and didn't get in : (
(it was a hassle to get a $150CDN money order, that was the hardest part of the application proh-cess.)

From what I understand, they mostly go by grades (or 'marks', as they call it....) UBC and U of T are very, very, competitive- I don't know the stats of applied:accepted, though.

I am also looking in to what is required to transfer your pharmacist license from the US to Canada- there is no reciprocity set up btwn CA and Canada yet, so I guess I'll just wait and see...
good luck!

If you're educated in the USA in pharmacy and want to come to Canada, it is not that difficult, at least in ON. You just have to write your licensing exams like any Canadian graduate would. No extra classes that I'm aware of, maybe some internship hour requirement, but nothing nearly undoable.

And I disagree with the statement that UofT goes mostly on grades. 240 accepted out of an applicant pool of 1600+. 80% average entering grade and 75% was the cutoff on the low end. There is a substantial non-academic component, but I don't know the weighing of it.

No PA school in Canada that I'm aware of. We just have NPs.
