Canadian into SF Match w/out USMLE 1 ?

Hi,

I'm an MS3 at a Canadian medical school considering applying to the US (in addition to the Canadian match). US match happens months earlier but don't have USMLE Step 1. Should I even bother applying without Step 1 (I may do one elective at a US school before I apply)? Several students from my school last year got interviews from top notch US schools in various specialties, including rads, without having written Step 1. Not sure how the ophtho programs feel about a scoreless Canadian applying. Any insight here?

It may be a good idea to ask specific programs that you are interested in, but I would say that it is a disadvantage without a Step 1 score.

Out of curiosity, is there a Canadian equivalent?

Don't you have to sit USMLE anyway in order to get licensed in the US? Or are Canadians exempt?
