canadians

It is useless to compare the academic qualities of both types of schools. First, there are way more schools in the US than in Canada, hence making admissions less competitive (1 in 2 get into med school in the US; less than 1 in 4 get in in Canada). Thus, Canadian schools tend to get the cream of the crop. Second, Canadian school exams are more difficult BUT the percentage required for passing is oftentimes lower. For instance, at most US schools, passing is about 70-75%, while at Canadian schools (UBC, anyway) passing is like 60%. The same goes for undergrad. Why do you think in most Canadian undergrad schools, you can get by with 50%, while at most US undergrad schools, passing is 65-70%. Which method of grading actually produces more competent doctors is up for debate... but my point is you simply cannot compare like that.

•I dunno, VC15. I interviewed at Duke, Northwestern, and Columbia, and have an acceptance at MCW (granted not top 10) (plus interviewed at four other US schools) but I was rejected from my home school, UBC without interview...•••••That varies.

I got into good US schools a couple years back then and I also got into McGill as out-of-province.

Two highschool friends of mine both were top students at Queen's. One got into Toronto as out-of-province but did not get into any top American school. Another got into Canadian schools no problem but got into one top American school off the waitlist in July (that was close for him).

On the other hands, two other friends went to UBC and did not get into UBC med but are now in top American med schools.

I don't think that you can see a pattern here.

However, I do believe that UBC is an anomaly. They look for certain applicants and screw the rest who don't fit their profile. Their percentile scores are a joke. A friend of mine interviewed at 6 American schools three years ago before interviewing at UBC and he got a 2 percentile interview score from them! That gotta be a joke because I don't see with so much LIVE interview practice in the US before March, how he could possibly do worse than 98 percent of the other interviewers many of whom ONLY apply to UBC. Well, he is happy med school in another province. So I would say only UBC is weird (I personally would not call it HARDER to get in to but just "weird") while other med schools whether in other provinces or in the states seem to have more of a pattern.

As you know, I don't have much respect for UBC med.

To all the Canadians here, how are your applications going? Anyone have a clue as to where they'll be headed this August (I guess this is relevant only to those who applied to the States)? I hope I'm not the only one who still hasn't attended an interview yet! My first one is at Queen's next week, followed by Western, Ottawa, and Toronto. No love from McMaster, but I'm cool with that. Anyways, good luck to all of you, and hopefully you end up at your first choice...

It's down to Duke, MCW and Northwestern for me... probably won't attend any more interviews, and have withdrawn from the rest of my waitlisted schools. Good luck at Queens, my friend is gonna be there next week!

btw, thewonderer, I didn't know you had such distaste for UBC. I guess that makes at least three of us...

Barring some sort of scholarship opportunity, the University of Manitoba. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

•btw, thewonderer, I didn't know you had such distaste for UBC. I guess that makes at least three of us...•••••My distaste is more or less based on how my friends' application processes turned out to be. My year from highschools have, say, about 9 people who are in med schools. There are around 5 at UBC med, 3 of whom were in french immersion programs in highschool. ding! Does it say something? There are 4 other friends in different years who did not get into UBC med who are now happily in other Canadian and US med schools. And yes, they are all in-province applicants.

Hi TheWonderer:

I recently interviewed at McGill as an OOP applicant and it hasn't been fun waiting for McGill to make its decision. I think there were ~400 applicants this year, of which they interviwed 46 and will accept 5. So, my chances are not that great.

When you applied to McGill, did you feel you had a great interview? Considering the fact that you got into a good US school, you must have great stats. Do you mind sharing them?

Thanks a lot!

McGill should accept more OOP than 5 since people do turn it down.

I had ok interviews. I did not feel that my interviews correlated well with acceptances and rejections. However, I had horrible interview with a psychiatrist at Yale and I did get a rejection without a waitlist.

My stats? don't know if it is relevant anymore since it is at least two years out-of-date.

AMCAS GPA is 3.85 and MCAT of 38.

Also, I don't think it hurts to graduate from the same undergrad as Dr. Becker, the vice admission dean(?) There are two OOP interview days and on my day, three of us (the interviews) came from the same undergrad in the states =)

I am new here and I am Canadian too•••••Welcome to SDN! 🙂

Just had my Queen's interview today. Anyone else? Any thoughts? 🙂

Queenschem/missing Manitoba had hers today. She's on both Ian's board and Vijay's board...

How did things go?

Hey, jase, why are you trying to go to dental school? Would you rather go to dental school in Canada than Tufts??

Yeah! It all comes down to money unfortunately 🙁 and my lack of it... I will borrow, but I want to see what's out there first.

Tufts is pretty expensive at 35k. I hope to get into Mt Sinai at this point both because it is less expensive (23k) and that it's NY. It's also a better school in terms of ranking, reputation, etc. The more I think about it, NY looks better! 🙂

In terms of dentistry, I'm really not sure about that. Just trying to open up my options when it's time to choose where to matriculate.

With regards to the Queen's interview, everything went as normal. It's impossible to tell whether they liked/disliked you. It's a conversational interview, and so everyone basically "does well."

What are you plans right now?

I only applied to four US schools. Got rejected immediately at Harvard and Yale, got rejected post interview at Duke, and now I'm waiting on Stanford. Mainly because of the money, I'm pretty sure I'll go to the U of Manitoba for meds if I get in, and I think I should... I'm not holding out a lot of hope on Stanford, and even if I do get in, I'm not sure that I'd want to borrow that much money.

The money is scary, but it's probably something you could pay off. It's just a bit unnerving to be borrowing that much money...

Where did you apply to for dental school? I wish I'd applied to more med schools within Canada, looking back now... Places like UBC, Alberta, Queens and Western... Not Toronto...

I had that feeling coming out of my Manitoba interview. They didn't ask anything hard, so I don't know how they differentiate amongst applicants...

But, anyway, I'll probably end up at Manitoba. I find out in a month if I got in...

Brandonite... you will get in. You have stellar marks, MCATs, etc. 🙂

I only applied to UT and Western. I realistically don't think I will get in. But they are nice backup options.

Had my Queen's interview yesterday. It was pretty relaxing overall... the faculty and community member seemed kinda stone-faced though, so I don't know what they thought.

I had a good time in Kingston this weekend, and the med students at Queen's are very cool people. But U of T's still my first choice at this point.

ok,
I have a dilemma, i thought you guys might have some insight. I have an acceptance at McGill, but I am still waiting to hear from some US schools. How do i decide between McGill and a top twenty US school? I am just wrapping up an undergrad over here at McGill, so the prospect of another four years in the same place doesn't really appeal too much. On the other hand, the price is ok, the city is a cool place to live, and its generally considered a good school(though it may be overrated). I am still waiting to hear from the US school, so this is more of a hypothetical but i can take some time to wonder while not writing the paper I have due tomorrow ;-)

Go to McGill. It's cheaper and its international rep is good too.

Anyone looking for a study partner for the mcat in Toronto, Brampton or Ajax? Hope to write mcat for Summer.

haha 100 and some odd posts from 2002... and then all of a sudden 7 years later it's back.

I am so proud of my fellow Canadians!!

I'm Canadian, but also a US citizen doing undergrad in the States. The best of both worlds I suppose. Commonwealth citizenship may come in handy for Australian and UK schools if it comes to that. (Hopefully not.)

Hey! I'm Canadian =). I got accepted to Touro - NY and will be starting this August!!!

I don't know aboot any of you but to even incinuate that Marty Brodeur can lace Patty Roy's skates is a sin.

I'm sorry, I had to, God Bless Canada
