Hello Pharmaly :)

I'm being offered two positions and having a hard time deciding which one I should take :uhno:

1) Outpatient oncology position, so basically I will be a specialist in oncology.. hours M-F ; day shift with no weekends or holidays whatsoever.

2) Overnight inpatient position, 7 on 7 off

The salary of both is about the same. I have worked couple of shifts for both (yes including the overnight).. I only like the scheduling of the overnight and I LOVE to travel so that would help much with having 7 days off (plus the benefit of 3 weeks off when taking my vacation); However, i'm planning on having a family in 2 years so at the same time it's not easy to put down the oncology position (it's one of a lifetime chance??)

Think with me please! what would you do if you were to choose between both?

Thanks everyone for your inputs :)

Oncology position sounds awesome, personally. Do you mean you don't work holidays either or you have no holidays off?

I would probably take the oncology position, but I would strongly consider the overnight if I was already trying to have kids etc.

Which position has the better benefits?

The oncology position only M-F and closed on weekends and holidays
Both are from the same organization so same benefits package.

Oncology hands down. The overnight is not compatible long term for both your health or your family quality of living.

Oncology >> overnight especially for planning a family. Also consider the inevitable burn out from overnight, especially if you plan on traveling on off weeks frequently (even if you are still relatively young, an endurance athlete/physically well off, work well in isolation, etc.). Loneliness, lack of a regular social life, & boredom can be concerning for well-being. Overnight is not that ideal for raising kids & keeping significant others appeased (have seen more than a fair share of RPhs waiting for replacements to get out of overnight due to family commitment/lack of time to spend with children).

If you have somewhat of an interest in oncology, I would recommend it over the overnight position as others have mentioned.

Thank you everyone for your replies :)

Any other inputs from people who worked in similar positions would be greatly appreciated!

Personally, I don't know how people do 7 on 7 off. Seems it wrecks your circadian rhythm. I'd vote oncology.

For sure oncology then! I would definitely take that position.

oncology...it will look awesome on your CV

M-F day shifts, no weekends, no holidays? Take it.

As someone who just went to this schedule from a flexible 4 10s with some weekends I disagree.

Man, do I miss having random Tuesdays off.

Depends on the schedule your spouse has. If its bankers hours like the oncology position that could be a problem when kids are sick, dr apt and what not.

7 days off is nice. Theres a thread on this same page about pros and cons. Remember the problem with overnights is getting that 7 on covered by someone else.....

Are you single? If so go for overnight.
Also, 7:7 overnight positions should be paying much more than a regular hospital inpatient. If they're not, it's a rip off.

If married take the onc.
There's nothing sweeter than having weekends and holidays off.

I'm surprised how pro-oncology and pro-banker's hours people here are. Neither of those things appeals to me.

Not an option for the OP. Everyone would love a flexible schedule, but neither the 7/7 or M-F are flexible. They are set though.
