Hi!

I need help deciding what to do. I always knew that I wanted to do something in the health field but I just don't know which career path to go to. Now I am loosing time and can't decide, so I hope you guys can give me some advice. I know I want to do something either in Medicine (like becoming an endocrinologist) or Dentistry (general dentist). Also, I am not one of those people who are after the money but I actually care about people and I want to help them, especially those in undeveloped countries. Just a little information about me is that I was suppose to apply this year but I didn't because I haven't taken the MCATs or DATs. Also, I don't come from a strong family background that has education, so becoming a doctor is huge for my parents. I hope you guys can advise me. Thanks in advance.

(I posted this in the Medicine thread, so I get both views)

You should shadow as many MD specialists as you can, as well as DDS/DMD specialists. I think MD's can find a larger pool of patients with unique cases anywhere in America and in other countries.

I also come from an under-educated/underprivileged family and am the first American college graduate in my family. And yes it's hard without realistic support from the family, but nobody's going to help us if we can't help ourselves. Either stay in mediocrity, or help yourself and your family to rise above it; that's my take on it. Cliche-y, I know.

Definitely shadow doctors and dentists if you can. There are so many options in the medical field (allergist or sinus Dr, surgery, general practice, OBGYN, oncology, pathology . . . the choices are endless) Whereas for dentistry, that's already a narrowed down field. Get exposure, do your research and see what peaks your interest.

Keep in mind that both fields are competitive, so you'll have to work hard.

Shadow both fields then deciede what is best for you. Don't settle in a field that your heart is not in it, and please do NOT do it because it is expected of you from your parents. DP

Listen to the Doc.

Okay, I will take ya'lls advice into consideration but to me both seems similar. Only thing is dentists have a better work schedule than M.D. I will look into shadowing more and see what is right for me. Thank you so much for the advice. You guys rock!

Hey-

I have worked in healthcare for 5 years, 4 of which have been at a hospital. Truthfully, it really depends on what you want to do- shadow.. and just don't shadow for one or two days, get a weeks expereince, see what the lifesyles are like in each specialty.

MD's, depending on the specialty work 40-80+ hours a week
DDS/DMD work less, more like 50 hours per week
RN's CRNA's work around 40 or so

Basically, I aggree with everyone that posted. You must know what you are getting into before making a decision- if you love your job, it will be fun and the time put in becoming what you want to become will be just another day working towards your ultimate dream! Good luck in your pursuit!

...I want to help them, especially those in undeveloped countries.

If you REALLY want a good demonstration of dentistry AND a chance to help people, find an organization that does missionary work overseas. You can do actual dental work (extractions) helping real poor people. Great experience. My brother does this once a year in Honduras. I forget the name of the organization though.

Contrary to what you think, you're NOT running out of time. It isn't ever too late to start pursuing a health profession degree. I don't know the details of your life, but if you think that you're going to miss the bus if you don't apply next year, you're wrong. As long as you're willing, the schools aren't going anywhere and you can apply.
