Hi Guys,

Just wanted to get a thread started on the topic.

What are the overlaps and differences between the two? I'm kind of confused as to why there would be different symptoms and why some of the qbanks have not delineated them like FA.

well carcinoid syndrome is due to a malignant tumor that has metastasized. serotonin syndrome is caused by drugs. that's the main difference, and you'd be given the history obviously.

what he said basically..

I dont think you would ever have a question where you cant tell the two apart..

with carcinoid theyll always say blah blah mass found in the appendix or lung and with serotonin theyll say pt has this condition and is being treated with x y and z and one of them happens to be a 5-HT agonist or something.

drugs that can cause serotonin syndrome: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin_syndrome#Cause

using wiki cuz its simple and im going to bed..

just stumbled on this in FA:

Tx for carcinoid syndrome is octreotide

Tx for serotonin syndrome is the 5-HT antagonist: Cyproheptadine

so theres another difference for ya

?? They are totally different disease processes. It is like comparing generalized anxiety disorder with an overdose on amphetamines or myasthenia gravis with alzheimer's. The only similarity really is that the same neurotransmitter is involved.

I just came across a UW question about carcinoid syndrome today. In the explanation it says that carcinoid syndrome is not only due to increased serotonin, but also kallikrein, bradykinin, histamine, prostaglandins, and tachykinins.
