An applicant from a pretty highly reputed IM program (ie Doximity 'rank' ~10) with good board scores but BELOW average otherwise (minimal research like a 1-2 abstracts, 2 case reports, bland LoRs)...how difficult is matching into an average university cardiology fellowship if applying broadly. I saw that it is about 71% match rate to cards in 2019 I believe, but are the unmatched mostly not MD AMGs?

Probably not all that hard to match somewhere. Most AMGs match. Applying broadly and doing as many interviews as you can increases your chances. I'd say your extra-curriculars are average and look fine.

If you truly go to Hopkins/MGH/UCSF/WashU/Columbia etc, you'll have no problem matching to a program.

If you're from a top school it's relatively easy. Anything less than that though and you will have to WORK your way into the specialty.
