Why does one never here about a cardiology residency match? How does one match in invasive cardiology. If this sounds like a dumb question, keep in mind I have not started medical school yet.
Cardiology is a fellowship. This means that you have to first complete a residency.
So, to become a cardiologist, you first do 3 years of internal medicine. Then you do a cardiology fellowship (also 3 years, I believe) for a total of 6 years.
In order to do interventional cardiology, you would have to do an interventional cardiology fellowship after your cardiology fellowship. I believe that these are 2 years long, for a grand total of 8 years after med school.
Interventional Cardiology is typically 1 year long. Also Cardiology fellowship is one of the few (along with Pulm/CC and ID) that is filled through the fellowship match.
