There isn't a specific forum for this residency, so I thought I'd just ask everyone.... what sorts of things do people who did a preventive medicine residency end up doing? I am interested in public health type stuff so I am trying to see what careers are possible for physicians.... any advice or experience is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The American College of Preventive Medicine has a nice little slideshow about careers. It's located at http://www.acpm.org/cipm.htm

One quote from their website:
"Career paths include managed care, public health, occupational medicine, aerospace medicine, clinical medicine, informatics, policy development, academic medicine, international medicine, and research, covering all levels of government, educational institutions, organized medical care programs in industry, as well as voluntary health agencies and professional health organizations"

I think most docs in preventive medicine do the either general public health and prev. med route, or occupational medicine, but there is also aerospace as well. They have some data about jobs (which I forget exactly), but most that I know work in occupational or health plan settings, or for government at state or local depts of health. Or academics, of course.

You also probably know this, but you can get an MPH during your academic year (and if you already have an MPH, I think most residencies waive that year). You still need a clinical year (intern or dual-residency), and a practical year.

Rachana, to answer your question from the other thread, I think a combined IM/PM program would be 5 years, or 4 if you have an MPH already. (3 in IM, and 2 in PM but 1 is an academic year which typically yields an MPH).

According to FREIDA there are only 7 programs that offer this. The total length is 4 years.

For example,

Thanks for point that you - you're right that only 7 come up. But, some programs aren't captured in the search form. For instance, Dartmouth comes up under general preventive medicine only. But, if you go to their website, it lists the following combined programs:
Anesthesiology
Internal Medicine
Neurology
NH-Dartmouth Family Practice Residency/Paul Ambrose Fellowship In Family Medicine
OB/Gyn
Orthopaedic Surgery
Pathology
Pediatrics
Radiology
General Surgery
