Hi everyone,

I am an early-thirties licensed professional counselor and am considering making a career change to medicine. I chose counseling primarily because I love helping people and because I had some significant depression in undergrad that got in the way of excelling there. I got help and did well in a two-year masters degree.

In my current role I work closely with physicians and residents. I’ve realized that I would like to have more knowledge and training about how to help people get better. So I’m looking at what it would take to have a chance at medical school.

Because of my grades in undergrad (2.4 cgpa) and the almost total lack of sciences/math I’m fairly convinced that the Texas Fresh Start program is my shot. Here’s my first thoughts:

1. Year 1: Attend local South Carolina community college with bridge program into University of South Carolina. Complete 30 credits of gen eds.
2. Year 2-3: transfer to University of South Carolina Biology B.S. Complete 40-50 credits of program. Begin studying for MCAT.
3. Year 4: Move to TX. Transfer to ASU online while working/owning property to establish residency. Take 10-20 credits.
4. Year 5: transfer/enroll in a Texas CC under Fresh Start. Take easy class. Apply through TMDSAS.
5. ...
6. Med school?

I’m currently working on an outpatient center attached to a large hospital in South Carolina so I’m going to begin medical shadowing through my contacts here.

Let me know what you think of the plan.

Your plan seems OK to me but I'm not sure whether the AFS 90 hour requirement should be done in TX or not. TMDSAS is really accessible and happy to answer questions. I would give them a call, explain your situation and proposed plan, and see what they suggest.
