Does anyone know how the increasing use of cRNA's will effect the outlook/demand/salary of anesthesiologists in the future? It seems that many hospitals would use a cRNA in favor of an anesthesiologist in certain situations (i.e. more simple procedures) in order to cut costs. Can anyone speak intelligently from an informed perspective on the matter? Also, does anyone know how important research experience is to obtain a good anesthesiology residency? I (like everyone else here) knows that research is a must for the ultra-competitive fields, but what about for anesthesia? Thanks for your time and advice.

Almost everyone will tell you that, even though anesthesiology is becoming more competitive, it is still not a "top-flight" residency that REQUIRES a 240+ on Step 1, publications in the field, etc.

However, if you want to go to a top-notch academic program for residency, you probably want to have both of the above to be an excellent candidate.

Short answer? No, nobody really knows. But I also don't think, at this stage in your education, you could reliably predict much from any other field. Best to get a feel for things by browsing the Anesthesia forums. And remember that it still takes an anesthesiologist to staff the ORs with CRNAs.

Stop on. Be veeeeery wary about listening to predictions about the future of specialties. There was a well-documented move in the 80s or 90s to say say that the country was saturated with medical subspecialists. Ha. Show me a cardiologist or a gastroenterologist hurting for a job today....

Sage advice ... people on SDN and med students in general (i think) tend to be a little more wound up (me included) than most people out there ... so take anything people say into consideration, but also with a grain of salt.
