Carry anything during interviews?

Am I supposed to take a folder/portfolio to an interview? I was thinking in case they give handouts or anything. What about a pen? Basically, what do I bring besides myself?

I'm a guy and I took a portfolio with a pen (that also held some copies of my resume) with me and I was not the only one. Although, they did give everyone a folder with information and a pen to go along with it. You won't really write anything down though, unless someone mentions a person you should meet.

If you don't bring a portfolio with you, I would at least bring a pen and put it in the inside pocket of your jacket.

ditto, bring a folder, pen, and maybe your app or whatever you want to help you brief over for the interviews. It is true that most schools I know of provide you with a folder stuffed with info about their program, so technically you don't need anything although it just looks better to be prepared.

Yea I have a really nice black portfolio I was thinking of taking. I just didn't want to be the only tool carrying something.

If you have to write something and you have nothing to do it with it will look very unprofessional. Take a portfolio.

I hate taking things with me to interviews - I tend to clutch them very tightly and cause my palms to get all sweaty. Not that I've had any med school interviews, but I've had plenty of job interviews. I get really nervous. I think when it comes time for me to do med school interviews, I will probably take something small that could fit into a pocket - a pen and small pad of paper perhaps.

I've had 2 interviews so far, and the guys I saw either took nothing, just a pen, or a leather portfolio with a notepad and pen in it. Honestly, I think the pad is useless. The schools usually provide all the information you need, and although some people took notes on stuff, I don't think it's all that important. I would suggest taking a pen in your pocket, if anything. I'm a female, so I brought a bag with me out of habit, but I really never used it, except when I pulled out a notecard with questions to ask during my interview. Good luck!

of course, my parents sit with me, as well as a medical lawyer. It usually takes 5-10 minutes discussing things with the lawyer before I answer every question, but the responses are pretty good.

You're "supposed" to bring yourself. Everything else is extraneous. Bring whatever you feel comfortable carrying. I had nothing in any of my interviews, and everything was fine.

You know SDN always touts bringing your application to review, but I think you'd stick out looking over your AMCAS in my experience. Glance over it the night before if you need to review.

If you're intent on taking lots of notes (one guy filled 2 pages on a legal pad) then bring the portfolio, but if not, just bring a pen. The portfolio is one more thing you have to worry about in an already stressful time.
