Hey guys,

Just wondering of the two schools, Case and UDM, which one is the better school and the one you would ultimately choose to go to.

Because it seems that both schools are quite similar, they both cost relatively the same. They are both located in pretty dead cities (Cleveland and Detroit) with not much going on. And the weather is pretty bad in both places.

And Case has PBL 1st year whereas UDM is lecture-based.
And i think for Case, you start in clinics your 1st year and at UDM, you start in clinics your 3rd year? (correct me if i'm wrong.)

Any opinions and input is very much appreciated.
Thanks

I'm not familiar with PBL? What is it?

That sounds great that you get to start clinics your first year at Case! I would pick Case just based on that alone.

When you interviewed at both places, did you get to spend in the cities? What did you think? I know they seem similar, but I think Detroit is more industrialized than Cleveland. Do you have time/funds to visit again? When do you have to decide by?

PBL stands for Problem Based Learning. Its basically more of an active learning style where students are put into smaller groups where they generate ideas and discuss about certain topics. USC's dental curriculum is entirely based off of that.

Case has that PBL along with the traditional lecture-based style in the first year.
I do like how UDM's building and facilities are newer though. From my impression though, it seems that at UDM there are more classes and the students are busier because they teach you everything about dentistry so students are more "knowledgeable", whereas at Case theres relatively less classes, because they focus on teaching the main concepts that you need to know so it appears more "efficient".

As for city-wise, Detroit and Cleveland seems like a toss-up and they are both underserved communities where students will be able to help out a lot of patients.

Well, you can't really assume you'll get into both of these schools when you apply 😉 therefore, not much point to discuss it until you get your acceptances right? 😛

To answer your question though, I personally would avoid PBL like the plague, and go to Detroit, and UDM has state-of-the-art facilities too. Other schools with PBL are USC, Indiana, and UIC will start to incorporate PBL (and change from DDS to DMD 😱) in the next couple years.

UDM is unique when you consider the hospital base 60 chair clinic. You will treat people with a whole range of ilments. UDM will prepare you for almost any type of patient with medical conditions. UDM is very strong in that regard.
