I have noticed that several programs offer both categorical and advanced positions. Is it ok to apply to both at the same program? I havent received any useful information from anyone at my school. Thanks

By all means apply to both. You'll more than double the available spots to you for the match that way.

Im not sure I quite understand this.

When I search on Freida, I search for the programs that offer a prelim position so I don't have to worry about where I am going to have to go after PGY-1.

Should I not be doing this? At least two programs that I thought were semi-interesting got the boot by my approach.

Vent, will be in touch.

Forget that noise.

Apply to a couple of PRELIM programs. TY years, Medicine, surgery. That way you can apply to the Advanced Anesthesiology spots as well.

You can rank in any order you want. Examples: You could rank all the categoricals first. Then your prelim year. Then your advanced spots. OR you could rank each program in order that you like, Both Categorical and Advanced and rank your prelim years last.

You can ALWAYS scramble for a prelim year. Landing the anesthesia spot you want the most should come first.

I agree with vent. This is a good approach. I would suggest getting in tight with the IMED program director at your home institution and secure a sort of "sure thing" spot should you need it. That way, you minimize your moves if that is your concern(saves some $$$). Although, if you don't have kids, it might be fun to do an intern year in an exciting part of the country that you may otherwise never get to see. You will at least get to see what the inside of the hospital in that exciting city looks like. If you have a family, you may want to consider minimizing your moves by having that IMED prelim year wrapped up at your current home (and interview for 1-3 more prelim year spots depending on how competitive you might be). Transitional years are typically pretty competitive (look at the NRMP data).

So my question is, where do you find the "Transitional Year" spots? And just to be sure, I have submitted my Eras and am picking my schools, what exactly is "advanced" program?

Advanced= only the CA years. So PGY2-4. Means you are on your own (you must apply separately through ERAS) for finding a PRELIM year.

it seems that there are more categorical spots at most programs compared to advanced spots. are they traditionally less desirable?

i don't think that categorical are less desirable at all. i personally wish they all were categorical. i wish i didn't have to apply and interview at ty's and prelims...not to mention the possibility of having to move twice! ;-(
