This is the time of year that 4th year Dental students start freaking out; what am I going to do next year? & Dental directors of GPR/ Aegd programs start getting concerned about filling in their spots.
I have heard from several residents of both GPR/ AEGD program complain that dental directors promise the world to you during the interview with no intention of delivering. Well we don't do any Sedation right now, But.....
We plan on starting implants next year.... Once you sign the contract you at their mercy. What really sucks is when you here the next wave of applicants getting the same responses. Promising advanced training and then not delivering really is unethical ( not to mention it should be illegal).
Keep a steady head. Don't let someone push you into a program with a take it leave response over the phone. These guys are freaking out and as much as you are. If you are not going to visit the site at least call the residents. All of them before you committ. Good luck.

I would agree that program directors want to fill they spots and some to lie, some cheat in the match.

Honest is the best policy. We want HAPPY residents, residents who want to reach their potential. Most programs realize they are not the first choice (after the match) and the resident may not be completely happy.

Ask current residents.

Programs do change.. we increased from 6 to 8 and expected growth problems.. warned the residents, and they helped us overcome them. For next year we have eight and are trying to go to ten IF some things go through... Like most programs ... we modify year after year... and most programs believe in being up front. You should use caution in any decision... and again speak to current residents...

A reminder to speak with residents at the program, not just the director, is always a good reminder.

Hello there,

I agree with that. Ask the residents and talk to them privately. Also, talk to the lab people, the assistants, the hygeinists to give you their take but do it personally if you want the truth. If you speak to them in a room full of people, they all will tell you that their program is the best! Regarding the Match process, I wonder if how many program directors/applicants "cheat" in the process to get who they wanted. I am sure many. From my days of applying to GPR,AEGD,Pros prgrams, every single time after the interview, I always recieved a phone call later in the day and requested me to rank their program first if I want that spot. Surely it is against the Match policy but if it happened ten years ago, I am sure it still happen today. And I do know someone who got screwed over that tactics too. DP

Agreed. Take your time there are plenty of openings post-match, especially in the NY area from what I hear.
