Hey everyone!

I am a D1, and I just finished my first semester of dental school. I am seriously interested in oral surgery, and I want to fully commit to it early. My plan is to study this whole year as I can, ramp things up over my summer break (1 month) and throughout my fall D2 semester. I want to take it my first time over winter break of D2 year, so next January probably.

With all that being said, would it be a wise idea to start with bootcamp + sketchy over the next 6-8 months (about an hour or so a day just to get a good base) and then hit UWorld hard the last 4 months before my exam? Or is all of this a waste of time to start this early? I just want to be able to take this CBSE early as I can, but I also know I will be busy with dental school.

I appreciate it!

If you know it’s what you want to do it’s not too early, go for it. There are a thousand different times this has been asked and a bunch of great answers. Look on here at some of the recent posts or on the “Step1” Reddit page and read through the study plans on there. Pick a plan and stick to it.

Start as early as you can. You will need way more than 4 months for UWorld. It took me about 9 months to get through UWorld.

Idk I might disagree. I’ve been open since the first day of school and have had no problems. I don’t understand this advice yet. Maybe I will soon

You absolutely will. Start telling people you want to do Endo instead.

I told people I wanted to do OS since day one and had no problems. Now I am a resident. I don’t understand that mindset at all.

I think it’s just because people will eye roll. Dental students saying they want to do OS is like 4-year-olds saying they want to be an astronaut. 99% won’t end up going through with it.

We had ten people saying they were going into OMFS first year in dental school. Now it’s just me and another guy. People will laugh or try to talk you out of it. But once they see you’ve put in the work silently they will understand your passion.

The speed at which you do UWorld is very person dependent. Took me slightly over a month. Just do it at a speed that is conducive to learning every question/explanation.
