Hi All!
I am an African American female, currently in an Public Health/Social Work dual masters degree program at an ivy league university. I have completed 1 out of the 2 years in the program, and have finally decided I want to put in the extra time and apply to medical school. However I'm not sure what the best route to take is and if I have s shot?

Undergrad:
-Top 50 university
-B.S. in Psych
-GPA 3.3

Grad:
-3.7
-MPH/MSW
-Ivy

Both in undergrad to now I have tons of experience clinical, research, abroad, patient setting, shadowing, community service, organization executive board positions etc. I'm not so much worried about that. I do not have the prereq courses.

Should I take them all at CC? (saves a ton of money)
Would I have a shot at med school (Worried about low undergrad GPA.

All help and opinions highly appreciated!🙂😉:soexcited:

It depends.

What state would you be taking the CC courses? Does that state have strong CC's (like Calif does)?

look at the med schools that you would likely be applying. Do they accept CC courses for prereqs?

your undergrad GPA will increase once you take the premed prereqs and get A's in them. That will be about 40 more credits ( I didn't count, just a rough estimate). Since those new courses are BCPM, they'll boost both GPAs.

I have completed 1 out of the 2 years in the program,

Another thought.... could you squeeze in an undergrad prereq at your ivy while in grad school? Some grad programs don't mind if you take an undergrad class for interest. My brother took Italian classes while working on his PhD.

This might be a way to get a taste to see if you like and can handle the coursework. Have you already taken Calc I?

URM + ballpark decent MCAT will make it very feasible with a 3.3 GPA from undergrad. If you can hit a 503+/61st percentile and up for example, you'll have something like 75% odds of accept. Refer to this grid and this score conversion. Knock out the prereqs, take the MCAT, and then come on back to SDN for school list building in the What Are My Chances subforum.
