Hey guys,

I've tried to research about this but I feel like my situation is a bit unique. So, I first went to a CC and finished my prereqs and got my AS degree. And then transferred to a 4 year uni, but my gpa took a dive and I did ridiculously horrible & graduated with a poor gpa. Now I got my act together and want to do a DIY post bacc to apply for DO school and retake all the courses I got a C or below in.

My question is: should I go back to CC and retake few of the lower prereq courses where I initially took them the first time around or should I retake them at a local 4 year university? My plan was to take lower prereq courses such as Chem 1 and 2 and cell bio at CC (where I initially took them and got C's) and retake all the upper level courses at a local 4 year uni. I know some institutions look down upon CC courses so any advice/help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The way I'd look at this as a reviewer is that your CC work was easier than what you faced at university, based on your GPA dive. Easy work doesn't help your story. It's hard work that I need to see success in.

So in this case I'd hope you'd take the high road and prove what all successful premeds need to prove: that you can thrive for multiple years under a heavy load of mostly hard science. Med schools that will take you without that performance are not doing you any favors.

Best of luck to you.

The general advice is that 4 year > CC. If money/distance/etc is not a factor, you should choose 4 year as it is typically considered more rigorous coursework. You are also more likely to get a committee letter out of a 4 year, which could also help your cause. The one caveat I would say however is that non-science courses that you might need to retake are probably fine at a CC.

As long as your pre-reqs are done, apply to the schools using only your CC transcripts. No one has to know you went to a 4 year college.

True if it's 1972. These days there are data clearing houses that expose where/when you've attended. Worse, the exposure tends to come after you've been in med school a while, which gets you dismissed after you've taken on maybe $100k in debt, with no chance at ever having doctor wages to pay them off.

You're endorsing fraud. Spend some time thinking about what kind of person you are. Spend some time thinking about what kind of person you want making decisions about the health of people you love.

Yeah, in case DrMidlife wasn't abundantly clear, this is a very bad idea, don't even consider it.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate for all the help/advice. I have decided to apply to my local university & I will be starting this summer.
