For those of you who interviewed at CCLCM did you stay with student hosts? Did you interview at Case as well? I'm interviewing at both and am wondering if I should look to stay in a hotel as I don't want to overstay my welcome...
What worked best for you guys?
How many nights are you staying? I only interviewed at Case, but since I'm from out of the country, I had flight issues that led me to book a flight leaving the next day, so I stayed with the student host for 2 nights. I was kind of worried about it, but it ended up being totally fine, I didn't feel awkward at all. I took her and her roommate out to dinner (nothing fancy, just $30 for the 3 of us), they seemed really shocked that I paid for them. The 2-day stay was just fine, and I also took advantage of this morning to go sit in on my host's PBL session at Case, since I wanted to find out more about that aspect of the curriculum. I think as long as you are nice and appreciative and give them a nice gift or something, 2 nights is ok (just find something to do for yourself so you are not a burden). The money I spent on the dinner was definitely a lot less than the money I would've spent if I had gone to the hotel for the 2nd night.

MP, you were in the grp reviewed 10/18, right?

I'm not sure, actually. I interviewed only a few weeks ago but I did recall that my file ought to be reviewed fairly soon, if it hasn't been already.

I see in your MD Apps that CCLCM is your top choice so I'm really hoping that you get in!

from what i know about CCLCM (which is a lot...trust me), they love, love loooove nontraditional students. I think more than half of the entering class this year was considerably older than the average 22 year old straight ouf of undergrad. its pretty obvious they take life experiences into account when they make decisions.

i absolutely fell in love with CCLCM, but i know my chances there are realistically grim, with such a small class size.

good luck you guys! i'm interviewing soon!

MP, thanks, I hope so too, good luck to you also!

Actually I think you were in my interview group now that I think of it, you were the guy the CCLCM students outed as being an engineer, right?

starlight,

I certainly hope that's the case 🙂 :luck: to you also!

Yeah, that was me alright. In any case, I guess we'll find out soon. :luck:

I still haven't heard anything either!!! Didn't they say our files will be presented to the commitee that Friday? I'm contemplating calling them tomorrow to find out what's going on....

They were presented last Thursday. However, no one from even the first interview grp has been accepted AFAIK.

I interviewed on one of the very first days at CCLCM (early October), and today I got a phone call saying I was accepted!

So, it looks like they're finally starting to let people know. Good luck to all!

Wow, congrats! It looks like they're taking their time. You were probably reviewed on 10/18 meaning they took a bit more than three weeks to notify you. I suppose if they have the same schedule for us 11/1 reviewees it will be sometime around T-giving.

Both Case programs have a lot of older students. But it's a good mix, we have plenty of people who are right out of college or maybe took a year or two off too. I think that your perceived fit is really important for this program, regardless of your age or life experience. Just being nontraditional won't help you if the adcomm thinks you won't fit well into the program.

I think Dean Franco is still waiting to hear back from Case about the people CCLCM wants to accept. We're having a class meeting tomorrow, so I'll see if I can find out anything for you guys.

If the Intercontinental is only $10 more than the Suites, they must have really raised the prices since I interviewed two years ago!

Awesome, congrats! Hope you can come to the second look in March. 🙂

How does this work exactly? If you get rejected by UP, does that mean Case won't approve your acceptance?

No, they review you independently. It's possible to be accepted to CCLCM but rejected by the UP or vice versa. I've never heard of Case not approving a CCLCM accept, so I think it's kind of a formality. If Dean Franco is calling people, then she must have heard from Case. All of you will be getting letters in the mail soon then too. Good luck everyone!

Ah, I see. Well, I was in the second interview group that was reviewed last week, so it might be longer unless Case sent decisions on us too.

I don't know. I'll ask Dean Franco tomorrow and let you know what she says.

What are the scholarships like at CCLCM? I know that they have great financial aid and that their ultimate goal is to get it tuition free but I was wondering what types of scholarships they have now and how many of these they actually have (full tuition, half tuition, partial, only need based, etc.). Your help is greatly appreciated.

Here's the list of them from the webpage: http://www.clevelandclinic.org/cclcm/financial_assistance.htm Some of them come with a stipend as well as full tuition.

Anyone know how CCLCM students have done on step 1? I know that it really depends on the student, but I do believe that a certain type of curriculum can prepare you better for the test. I have been told by some medical students from other institutions that PBL based learning does not prepare you well for step 1.

I heard 230ish for the last class...
Oh wow!

Do they also use USMLE bank questions for their regular tests, like Case? That was one thing I really liked when I was at Case. I think it's a great way to prepare for Step 1.

The class of 2009 averaged 229 on Step I with a 100% first time pass rate. (The national average is around 217 with a 92% first time pass rate.) The official stats haven't come out yet for the class of 2010, but rumor has it that they did even better than the first class.

CCLCM does not teach toward the boards, so if that's what you're looking for, this isn't the right program for you. However, it is NOT true that PBL curricula do not prepare students for the boards as well versus traditional curricula. Several peer-reviewed studies have been done looking at how each type of curriculum prepares students for the boards, and most have found no significant difference between PBL versus traditional curricula with regard to USMLE performance. Here are a few references on this subject if you're interested in reading more about it:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=15734816&dopt=Citation

One study found that PBL students actually performed better on the USMLE:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=16799282&dopt=Citation

On a somewhat related note, PBL is not just a med school thing. This study was done looking at the Harvard Dental School. They found that their PBL curriculum led to higher scores on the dental board exams: http://www.jdentaled.org/cgi/content/abstract/67/9/1003

These students from other schools that you talked to may not particularly like doing PBL, and that's perfectly legitimate. I'll be the first person to say that CCLCM is not the right program for everyone, maybe not even the right program for most people. I have friends at other schools who really like going to lectures or watching them on line. Personally I can't relate to that feeling at all, but everyone has their own preferences for how they learn the best, and it doesn't mean that what works best for one person works best for everyone. You have to decide what works best for you. But, if you think that you would like to attend a PBL curriculum school, do not let people scare you off by telling you that you won't be prepared for the boards, because the scientific evidence does not back up that claim.

Do they also use USMLE bank questions for their regular tests, like Case? That was one thing I really liked when I was at Case. I think it's a great way to prepare for Step 1.
I'm not sure what you are asking here. We don't have tests at CCLCM, so we don't take the block tests that the UP students take. If that's what you're wondering, then no, we don't take those tests or any others during our time at CCLCM. If you mean do we take the practice NBME exams that are put out as preparation for the USMLE, then yes, we do take those. There is a four hour NBME basic science test being offered free of charge to us through the school on two different dates. Some of my classmates will be taking that test this Thursday along with the UP students, and the rest of us will take it next month. The school also gives us each two vouchers to purchase two additional NBME practice tests (there are a total of four available for purchase). We can purchase the last two exams at our own expense if we want to take them, which I think most of us plan to do. Finally, many of us are also getting Qbank from Kaplan, which has a few thousand practice USMLE-style questions. So if you're a person who likes to do a ton of questions, no worries. There will be more than enough for you to do even if you don't do them as part of the standard curriculum. 😉

Drizzt3117 and anyone else waiting to hear, Dean Franco didn't attend our class meeting today, so I don't have anything new to tell you about when you will hear. Sorry.

I got a hold letter in the mail today. So sad CCLCM is my 1st choice. 🙁 Anyone know if the hold list is ranked in any way?

Sorry. 🙁 It seems like most people go on hold post-interview though, and you definitely still have a chance to be accepted later.

From what Dean Franco has said, I'm pretty sure there isn't a hold list ranking. When the apps are voted on by the adcomm, they give everyone a rating, and anyone above some pre-set cutoff gets an immediate accept. They set the initial cutoff pretty high because the class is so small so they can't immediately accept too many people. After interviews are done and people start withdrawing, they can start lowering the cutoff and then more people get accepted. So it's not just one person at a time who would get moved above the cutoff, it's everyone in a certain range, if that makes sense.

If you have anything new to submit for your file like new ECs or grades or whatever, you can send an update to the admissions office. I don't know how much an update helps, but it can't hurt.

I got put on hold as well 🙁 I am very sad as CCLCM is definitely my top choice, and I'd already written a letter of intent 🙁

I should be getting some pubs accepted soon, so I'll probably put together another update letter. Definitely disappointing, though 🙁

Drizz, I'm so sorry to hear that! But a hold seems different than a waitlist at this point, right? I'm pulling for you!!

Sorry, I know you were really excited about the program. Congrats on getting the pubs though.

Yes, it is different. There will be a waitlist, but not until all of the interviews are done in the spring. People who are on hold can be accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. Hold means more waiting to hear a decision, basically. 🙁

Yeah, it's better than a waitlist in that you can be accepted before spring, so hopefully that happens... I guess we'll see though, the best I can do is keep them updated and make sure they know I really want to go there...

cclcm is giving priority to good looking people this year. If you are good looking, send me a picture, I will personally meet with both Dean Fishleder and Franco, and various other members of the adcom to make sure you have the best chance.

Why is everyone so crazy about this school? what's the secret?

Why is everyone so crazy about this school? what's the secret?
I'm sure if you asked ten people this question you'd get 12 answers. I'm here because I liked the program and the small size of the class and they gave me the best financial aid, pretty much.

I haven't had the opportunity to check my mail recently but seeing as how I haven't received any happy phone calls and that I interviewed on the same day as Drizzt, it seems like I'm looking right now at a hold at best and possibly a rejection. I'm going to dread opening that mailbox when I get home today from work.

Hope it's all acceptances for us all from here on out! :luck:

I'm on hold... ick... but I'm submitting a manuscript within the next two months, so hopefully that will look good at a future adcom meeting...

I'm officially on hold as well. So, if I'm to understand this letter correctly we probably won't hear anything until... April?

It seems like the majority of the people on this thread got put on hold, granted that this is a small sample size.

Yeah, during my interview, Dr. Murray told me that pretty much everyone gets put on hold or rejected unless the majority of the adcom votes immediate accept, including both interviewers. Apparently that is pretty rare and only 10% of interviewees are accepted in that way, which isn't enough to fill the class IIRC.

Ah good to know, I remember Dr. Murray telling me something similar (without the 10% part). Well, here's hoping that we all eventually hear good news.

hmmm....I interviewed before drizzt and Mister Pie, but no phone call and no letter in the mail....back to the waiting game i guess

Well, I don't want to give false hope but maybe whoever's supposed to give you the phone call has just been busy recently. =)

Cause it seems like a lot of the people who interviewed after you already got a letter, so perhaps you should give them a call to see what's up.

Well, to those who received the letter, does iapply say anything about the College Program?

As far as I can tell, there is no electronic way of checking your status at CCLCM. My Case status page only mentions my Case status.

Most people do get put on hold. They don't give out too many acceptances or rejections until the spring.

No, you can check your UP status but not for CCLCM on iapply.

Sorry to hear about all of the holds. 🙁 If you all are really interested in coming here, you should update Dean Franco if you can. Definitely tell her about things like getting new pubs, brainfry. Good luck. :luck:

Hey guys! I know I haven't posted on here before, but I've been obsessively checking this thread! I got a call from Dean Franco yesterday afternoon so obviously the decisions from the second group have been approved by Case!! I'm so excited and I hope to meet a lot of you at second look! Good Luck and Happy Thanksgiving! 😀
