Hey guys! I know I haven't posted on here before, but I've been obsessively checking this thread! I got a call from Dean Franco yesterday afternoon so obviously the decisions from the second group have been approved by Case!! I'm so excited and I hope to meet a lot of you at second look! Good Luck and Happy Thanksgiving! 😀

Congratulations pxm! That school is awesome. Hoping to get a call..........

Congrats! Definitely do try to come to the second look if you can. It's a lot of fun.

i was just checking out the interview itinerary (interviewing soon!) and it seems like an exceptionally long day, with lots of time planned out for the tour and each interview.

does the tour include the entire hospital? it seems pretty unlikely that walking us around the lerner building will take that long. in the confirmation email, it specifically says to "wear comfortable shoes" and i'm wondering whether i should go out and buy an emergency pair, since my current pair of heels give me blisters and i can hardly walk by the end of even my shortest interview days.

also, who are the interviewers? MDs? PhD's? people on the admissions committee? are we grilled a lot on our research?

i'm really excited to go but also really nervous, since it's one of my top choices and i love, love, love the program and hospital. any information would be greatly appreciated! (i checked out the interview feedback but so far the few i've read haven't been that informative!)

also: how many people generally interview per day?

THANKS!

Yes plz someone respond to the above post b/c I have a lot of the same questions with a late december interview on the horizon...this is one school im really excited/nervous about and want it to be a great day!!!

i think we have the same acceptances, since i see you around a lot in other threads. cant believe you went to Mich and are now considering OSU 😀

are you interviewing at case also, then?

Yes, it's a very long day. I believe we finished around 5.

Yes, it includes a lot of the hospital. We walked about 2-3 miles. There was a girl in heels in our group and we all felt bad for her 🙁 I would bring comfortable shoes, you can change at lunch before the interview if you'd like.

also, who are the interviewers? MDs? PhD's? people on the admissions committee? are we grilled a lot on our research?

I was interviewed by a MD and a PhD. I was asked quite a bit about my research during the PhD interview, and some during my MD interview. I wouldn't say it was a grilling, both interviews were quite conversational although they certainly asked a lot of questions.

7 during my day, that is apparently pretty typical.

Mine was mostly just the Lerner Institute and some of the hospital, the CC is huge and I don't know if they ever take people through the whole hospital or if they could in the time you have.

also, who are the interviewers? MDs? PhD's? people on the admissions committee? are we grilled a lot on our research?

I had one of each. I do not know if they are actually on the committee or not. I wouldn't call it "grilled" but know your research back and forth. One of my interviews lasted more than an hour, the other one finished early.

i'm really excited to go but also really nervous, since it's one of my top choices and i love, love, love the program and hospital. any information would be greatly appreciated! (i checked out the interview feedback but so far the few i've read haven't been that informative!)

Overall, everyone was really nice. The interviews were conversational for the most part, I never got any hard questions like ethics or anything like that. I thought the hardest part was actually the length of the day, I didn't finish till about 3 or so and I was beat (and had a Case inv the next day!)

also: how many people generally interview per day?
Lower than most schools. (They said they only invite 250 to interview for the 30 seats in the first place) I've heard 5 is a typical number. I actually flew solo, the only applicant for that day. I heard this will happen sometimes but is rare, probably more a product of coordinating with case.

Anyways, like I said it really is a nice day although sorta long, no stress tests or anything like that, and everyone is pretty nice and they want you to enjoy the visit.

Good Luck!

The tour definitely won't be of the entire hospital. The hospital is simply enormous, and it would probably take a week to see all of it, but they are seriously going to walk you anyway. They've shortened the tours from what they used to be, but the tour is still really long, like an hour and a half. I suggest that you bring two pairs of shoes, one comfortable pair that you can wear for the tour, and then wear your heels in the interviews. Since they hurt your feet, you really, really, REALLY don't want to be walking all over CCF in your heels.

also, who are the interviewers? MDs? PhD's? people on the admissions committee? are we grilled a lot on our research?
Some are MDs, some are PhDs. They are all on the adcomm. Usually you will get one research interview (often by a PhD) and one why medicine interview (often by an MD), but that's not always the case. You should definitely expect to have to explain your research, its significance, etc.

also: how many people generally interview per day?
Anywhere from one to eight. The usual is probably around five or six.

I think most people do enjoy their interview days. People here are super friendly and they want you to make the right decision for you. This program is really different than most other med schools. It's probably worth your while to read up about it on the website so that you already have some understanding of how the curriculum works here and you can get more out of your visit.

Good luck to all of you who are coming to interview, and make sure you bring a warm coat. It looks like we're going to get snow later this week.

Yeah, the tour was exceptionally long. I'm pretty sure we went to every lab in the institute. We also saw a lot of the hospital, but our tour guide was a lab tech and didn't seem to know her way around the hospital too well. When she heard I did MRI research, she took us to the MRI wing, which was nice.
I wore low heels and my feet hurt by the end of the day, but it wasn't too bad.

also, who are the interviewers? MDs? PhD's? people on the admissions committee? are we grilled a lot on our research?
I had two MDs, neither one seemed to focus solely on research, but I definitely had to give a thorough explanation and respond to questions about hypotheses and future research.

It's a really long day, so keep yourself caffeinated and peppy (I kept candy in my bag for right before the interview). The hospital and research buildings are beautiful and the students seem great. Good luck! It's a great program (and apparently they give amazing financial aid!). PM me if you have more questions.

Also got put on hold. I have a lead authorship that, while accepted by my interview, isn't in print just yet so I'll be sending the cite once it's printed along with an LOI.

Best luck to everyone!

Glad you enjoyed it.

Just FYI to everyone who interviewed recently, the next adcomm meeting is this Thursday. Good luck. 🙂

What do you think they are looking for when they interview people? I know that most schools look for similar things but since this is such a unique program I thought I'd ask. I'm guessing fit with the school, genuine interest in research...anything else (aside from the standard stuff like passion for medicine, maturity)?

genuine interest in research and a career doing it, self-directed learner (are you okay with picking up a book and learning it and teaching it to others?), and good at working with others and in groups. Those are the most important things for a student here I think. Passion for medicine and maturity go for all schools I think.

Ahhhh I got an interview today! Very surprised but happy!
Congrats!
yeah.. i interviewed on thursday and got accepted today!
Congrats to you too. Hope you can make it to the second look in March.

Gotta agree with JDW: your fit with the school is the single biggest thing they're looking at. Research interest is pretty much a given. Everyone who gets invited to interview here is academically capable of making it through the program and has significant research experience. So now they want to know things like, can you work well in small groups? How do you handle disagreements or people telling you that you need to change something you're doing? Do you understand the expectations of this program, and are you going to fulfill your professionalism obligations (ex. come to classes, participate in class, give feedback, etc.)? Are you engaged and interested? Participation is important here. I think the worst things people can do is come to their interview and sit around looking like they're bored, or else dominate the entire discussion. Neither of those types of people would be terribly desirable PBL group members, you know?

That makes sense. Thanks guys.

(My interview just got moved to next Fri yay!)

Do you think it's safe to say that if someone from my interview group has already been accepted and I haven't heard anything, I'm either rejected or put on hold? Ideas?

No, because people don't necessarily get decisions at the same time even if they interviewed at the same time. There are lots of possible reasons for delays besides being put on hold. Like, the adcomm could have tabled your app until the next meeting, which would tack on an extra two weeks. Or, Case could still have it and CCLCM is waiting to hear back. There's no sure way to predict what decision you'll get based on another person's. Good luck, I hope you get a call soon. :luck:

Aww thanks! That makes me feel better 😛

If you are the kind of person who likes to study independently, you won't like this program.

I'm a little confused about this. I know that the small group stuff is required and there's no lectures, so you do learn a lot by working with other people. But doesn't the curriculum require a lot of independent learning as well?

hi! i just received an interview at cclm--totally unexpected--i was wondering what the chances are of people that gave interviewed/received interviews with cclm, of also being invited to interview with the case western university program...

thanks!! and sorry if this has already been answered!

thanks--i will now go back and read the rest of this thread =)

If you don't already have a UP invite on your iApply you probably won't be getting one....

You'll get invited to both if you're interviewing at Case as well.

BTW, got my (expected) hold letter in the mail a few days ago. Disappointed. About how many people do they take off the hold list each year? The letter says they don't look at the list until April?

I heard 10% of interviewees get immediate acceptances and depending on the yield, the rest of the people that are accepted (20% or whatever of interviewees, may be less this year because they're interviewing more people) get in either off the hold list or wait list but this could be completely wrong.

Well, yeah, you do have to study on your own also. Other people can't do your reading for you. 😛 I'm talking about people who ONLY want to study alone. Like, if you want to spend your first two years of med school sleeping in until noon, sitting at home in your underwear, and watching your lectures on line at double speed instead of attending class, this isn't the program for you. If you want to sit in the back of an auditorium with 100+ students and not participate, this isn't the program for you. If you want a packet of notes to be given to you at the start of each semester with everything that will be on the test, this isn't the program for you. We have required attendance, and we are expected to participate. Does that make more sense?

You'll get invited to both if you're interviewing at Case as well.
Right. If you're invited to both programs, they'll both send you an email. You can check your Case status on line to see if you got a UP invite.

Sorry. 🙁 I don't know how many people will come off hold, and I don't think anyone else does at this point either. You have to wait until April because they won't take anyone off hold until after they're done interviewing, which will be in March.

If anyone interviewed within the last two weeks, the adcomm meeting was today, so you should hear something soon. Good luck!

Thats me! Unfortunately I won't be around to get the call 🙂D) or letter 🙂thumbdown).

Btw how does this work? I was told that the next cclcm adcom meeting was 12/13 and the next case adcom meeting was 12/17. If cclcm decides to accept someone and they have to get approval from case, do they have to wait until after the case adcom meeting? Or is there another avenue that they go through?

I guess it doesn't matter too much because they aren't very far apart.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but my understanding is that the CCLCM acceptees are approved at the Case adcomm meetings. Dean Franco attends the Case adcomm meetings, so it would make sense for them to do it that way.

In case anyone is interviewing next week or early Jan., the next CCLCM adcomm meeting will be on Jan. 17.

That is me. I will be interviewing next Friday. Will I need to bring my big heavy coat for the tour or will my suit coat be good enough?

The tour is indoors, so I don't think you'll need your coat. If you're staying at the IC, you won't need the coat at all.

That is me. I will be interviewing next Friday. Will I need to bring my big heavy coat for the tour or will my suit coat be good enough?
You won't need a coat for the tour. Most of the buildings on campus are connected by skyways except for a couple of outpatient centers, so the tour will be completely indoors. But you will probably want to wear your heavy coat to travel here. (Weather forecast for Friday right now is mid thirties with rain/snow showers.) Oh, and make sure you wear comfortable shoes. This hospital is huge, and they are not kidding when they tell you that the tour is really long. If you're a girl and you want to wear heels, what you can do is bring a pair of flats to walk around in and then change your shoes during lunch before you go to the interviews.

Just so everyone knows, it's totaly ok to bring coats, umbrellas, suitcases, etc. with you to your interview. The admissions people will lock your stuff up in a closet in the morning when you get here. People do it all the time, so no one will think you are weird if you to show up at the admissions office looking like you're on your way to the airport. 😛

You guys are lucky not to be in Cleveland right now. We're getting a huge ice storm and even if Case closes tomorrow, CCLCM still has class. I guess I'd better get out my reindeer and sleigh. 😛 If anyone is interviewing tomorrow, dress warmly and bring snow boots if you have them.

Good luck custard and psychotropic, I hope you guys get good news. Try not to think about med school stuff for a while and enjoy your holidays.

Just missed the call from Dean Franco by 10 minutes!! So Excited! Looking forward to second-look! Good luck to those who have yet to hear!

Congrats!!!

I'm quite envious! I just received my Case acceptance tonight (which I'm quite happy about since I liked Case a lot), but since I haven't heard anything from CCLCM yet, I'm guessing I'm probably being put on hold (at least I'm hoping so vs. outright rejected). I loved CCLCM so I was hoping for good news...guess I'll probably have to wait longer.

Anyways, hooray for everyone with good news! Go celebrate 🙂

I got the good news on my voice mail earlier this evening. I now have to decide between the University Program and CCLCM. If you would have told me three months ago that I would be in this situation, I would have told you to get out of here. Crazy things do indeed happen.

This process sucks, but I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Keep your heads up everyone.👍

Best of luck to all:luck:

Wow, congrats!!! This is great news.

When did you interview at CCLCM?

caffeineaholic: Congrats on the Case acceptance! Don't worry about CCLCM yet, I think (correct me if I am wrong) that they put a lot of people on hold at first since the class is so small, and then they admit more people later on.

also got the call from Dean Franco tonight! sooo psyched!!

I am currently in a hotel in the South (had an interview earlier today) and was wandering around the city looking for dinner when I got the call from the Cleveland number around dinnertime. I was lucky enough to pick up right away and all I heard was "I have some good news for you" before completely flipping out. i didn't hear anything she said after that (i think she said something about mailing me 2 letters??).

I interviewed late November right after Thanksgiving and was told I would go to committee that week. I had pretty much given up hope since I was told the decisions came super quickly if accepted, so I was caught completely off guard tonight 3 weeks after I interviewed. I think my application probably got tabled until the adcom meeting last week.

Anyway, I'm 99% sure I will be attending (Ohio native). I still feel like I'm floating...this was my #1 choice by far.

I got put on hold by the University Program a couple weeks ago, felt that my interviews at the UP were better, and was completely dejected so don't give up hope guys :luck::luck::luck:

I wonder how common it is to NOT get accepted by the UP but into the CP. Anyway, look forward to meeting some of you guys at second look!

custard: Thanks! I interviewed in early december.

caffeineaholic: congrats on the UP acceptance!! and don't lose hope on possibly being accepted later!

psychotropic: Congrats to you too! I definitely wasn't expecting to be in this situation either, though CP pretty much outweighs UP for me!

starlight04: congrats! What exactly do you mean by flipping out? haha When I played back the message I was jumping up and down yelling oh my god! I'm pretty sure I'll be attending too.

Looking forward to meeting you all at second look!

I was in a bookstore when I got the call and basically started wandering around the aisles blindly as I was talking to her. All I kept saying was "oh my god thank you so much, oh my god i can't believe it" over and over to her and everyone in the store was staring at me. She probably thought I was a nutcase and wanted to rescind my acceptance. I ended the conversation by telling her that she made my week and proceeded to call my parents and say "oh my god" some more. =)

I had a pretty mediocre interview this morning at a school I was really interested in, and was bummed out about that all afternoon. Needless to say, CCLCM acceptance made up for that

Starlight, I'd never want to put words in Dean Franco's mouth, but I highly doubt she thought you were a nutcase. I would imagine that calling the acceptees and hearing people go crazy like you did must be one of the best parts of her job. 🙂
