Does anyone know of any good bars or night clubs in the Downers Grove area?

There is a good restaurant/bar/nightclub which is a microbrewery just a couple of minutes away in Lombard. It's right across the street from the Amerisuites hotel that I stayed in during the interview. I'm sorry but I don't remember the name of the restaurant, but I know that it is very popular.

BUMP!! 🙂

PS: Kristopher - I saw "Gross Anatomy" last night. Very good movie! Thanks for the recommendation!! 🙂

I haven't check this site in a week and wow there have been quite a few posts. I think I will be on the 10 meal plan. I'd rather spend an extra buck and not have to use that dollar on gas or regret not making to class because of traffic or someone hit my car. Anyway, it looks like it is gong to be very hot here for the next few days. I hope the weather cools before school starts. I am in traditional dorms and minus air conditioning :-( Talk to you all soon.

-Aaron

hey yall, hope you summer is all well as there is not too much left.
does anyone know how buying of textbooks works? i know we dont get our finaid until mid sepetmeber or so, so can we charge our books to our tuition bill, because we will obviously need our books to study from before that?

well the countdown is on, cant wait, and i will see you all at orientation.
later
josh

Hey guys!

Can you all believe that we are finally in the home-stretch? I simply just can not wait. I am way too excited!! 🙂 Anyway, I can't wait to finally meet everyone and see everyone I have already met! Have a great last week of freedom, everyone!! 😉

PS: Josh - everyone I talk to says to wait until classes start to see what books you will actually use. As for the $$ situation, I am sorry, I have no clue. 🙁 But, a very kind, quick responding lady at CCOM named Kim Brown is always very informative in matters such as this. I would suggest either calling her or emailing her at:

[email protected]

Anyway, see you later! 🙂

Just thought I would say hello from the road. I'm on my way to Chicago right now. Well, actually I'm at the end of a long stop here in Las Vegas! 😀

I did have a question for everyone though......
Does anyone know what you need to do as far as registering a vehicle from out-of-state?

I will have one car in CA and the one i'm bringing to Chicago. Do I need to get an Illinois Driver's License and register the vehicle in IL???? I'm confused. And also, where is a good place to get car insurance?

Thanks,

Kristopher

Kristopher,

I had the same question you did a couple of years ago. You do not need to get a Illinois Driver's License or Illinois License Plate. There is a Secretary of State Dept of Motor Vehicles in Downers Grove on Midwest, north of 31st St, if you want to ask more questions. The license plate fee, by the way, is not prorated like it is in California. It is only $78 a year.

You do not need to change car insurance either. You are allowed to keep you California insurance as a student, if you want. I do not know of any cheap insurance companies here since I kept my CA insurance. I called a lot and shopped around, but did not find any outstanding deals a few years ago.

You should also know that if you get a ticket here, unlike in California, the police may take away your license until you pay the ticket off. Apparently this is done in some states.

Good luck with the drive. It is not fun. Don't forget to turn your head right and left sometimes so that your head does not get stuck looking forward like mine did. California to Chicago is not a drive I want to repeat soon. Drive safely and take breaks.

Good luck to all of you taking a long trip out here.

Just one question: Does everyone still want to go out together the night of move-in day, 9/2/2003? I think it would be fun! I just wanted to remind everyone in advance so it is in the back of all our heads!! 🙂 Anyway, I will see a good number of you in less than 1 week!!!!!!!!!! Take care for now!! 🙂

For the benefit of all MS-1's with the same question, let me answer a private message I received here about OMM and anatomy lab attire.

Yes, you may wear scrubs. Many people did wear scrubs to anatomy lab. Just use something you don't plan to keep, because you will burn it in the bonfire ceremony when you finish anatomy. You will get an apron to wear over your attire, so don't worry about what you wear. Bring old shoes that you plan to throw away.

As for OMM, there is no special attire. It's pretty casual. I don't remember that many people wearing scrubs, but you can still wear them. As they will explain on the first day of OMM lab, you can wear casual clothes, but NOT jeans or something too thick. Your fellow classmate needs to be able to examine your spine and bones through whatever you wear. Sweats work just fine. Some people wore sweats for the entire day we have OMM. No, you will not have to disrobe. We palpate through the clothes. T-shirt, shorts, sweats, were what the majority of us wore.

Hope that helps. Post with any other questions. One of the worst parts is the uncertainty. That will end soon.

Thanks for the great info, as always, Dagny!🙂 🙂 🙂

Hey Adam-

I may be up for going out for a short time on Tuesday night. I cannot promise anything, though, because I am flying into Chicago on Monday at 10 PM and then moving on Tuesday. Here's hoping it goes smoothly and isn't too hot that day! I keep meaning to ask you; what apt. are you in? I know I've asked previously, but memory fails. Also, I'm in 414 apt. 8A. Looking forward to starting, and sorry I missed the BBQ again. It sounds like it was fun. See everybody Tuesday!

Mike:

Hello. How are you? I hope great. Anyway, we are practically neighbors!! I am in 414 apt. 8D!! 🙂 Also, the weather is scheduled to be just a high of 75. From what it has been here, that is a cool day!! I hope you do decide to go out, I don't think we should party like rock stars, but I think it would give us a chance to meet even more people before orientation! The closer we all get, the better these next 4 years are going to be!! 🙂 Talk to you soon, and remember if you need anything on move-in day, please do not hesitate to ask!! One more thing, did you ever get a chance to see the apartments? If not, go to my web site by clicking "www" below this post and I have like 5-6 pics there!!

Hey Adam,

You know I can't resist a get-to-gether. I will see you Tuesday night.

-Aaron

I knew you wouldn't let me down Aaron!!! 😉 Hey, have you decided exactly what time you are planning on arriving at CCOM on Tuesday? See ya then!! 🙂

Where are you guys planning the get-together? It sounds like a fun idea! 🙂

Hey Adam,

I will probably move in between 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. I am in A109. I am sure you have the housing meeting that night so we should go out afterwards. lates...

-Aaron

Aaron...I think we are going to be neighbors this year. I am living in A108. I'll be there on Tuesday around noon. I think I am going to have to meet you guys up for a drink that night. See everyone on Tuesday/Wednesday!!!

Rory

Rory & Aaron,

I will be living in A111. Sounds like we will be neighbors. See you guys on Tuesday.

Jeff

true you don't have to change car insurance if you're a full time student, but you might want to. i cut my insurance bill by over 1/2 moving to chicago from san francisco. things are A LOT cheaper here. if you're living in the burbs, i imagine you'll get even lower quotes. i did a bunch of research and the best quote i got was from esurance.com
hope that helps.
looking forward to seeing everyone in a few!
-john

Adam, Aaron, et. al-

Let's count on me going out that night; it's not like I'm sleeping in LA, and what's another night back in DG. See you guys soon, and Adam, I think we live across the hall from each other. Lates~

For those of you living in the dorms...are we allowed to hang anything from the walls using nails??? As spacious as I'm sure the dorms are  , I don't really want to bring anything I won't be able to use.

Hey guys, you guys all seem excited for school to start.

My name is Jason, and i am a MS-II. I met some of you at Aaron's party. I also noticed that you guys want to go out on Tuesday. I will call some other MS-II's and make a plan. Last year the second years invited us out, and i'm sure we will do the same. We will most likely be going out everyday next week, and encourage you guys to do the same. School doesn't start till the 8th, and orientation doesn't count for everything. Go through the ropes during the day and party like crazy at night. It might be the last little bit of craziness you see for a while.

Go through the ropes during the day and party like crazy at night.

Jason...I like you already.

Hey, haven't posted on here in a long while. I've been without internet for about a month so that makes it rather difficult. +pissed+

I called the wellness center today, and the lady said that for those of us who are having the titers drawn at school, there will be a mass drawing at the end of September. Can't wait!!!!! 🙄

How exactly is this going to work?? Do we have to call and tell them we need them drawn and they sign us up or is it some thing where they announce a set of days when you get it done and you just show up on one of the days??

I hope you guys are enjoying you quickly waning vacation and I can't wait to see you at orientation.

At the end of September there will be a week where you go in at lunch. They have 5 min blocks for each person to get the titers drawn... You just sign up and then show up. I hope that helps. This info was given to me by the wellness center... see you soon.

-Aaron

Would I be right in assuming the sign up would be at orientation, or do you have to stop by the wellness office and sing up??

Hi everyone!

I will also be an MS-1 this fall and have been travelling all summer from the west coast to the east coast and then back to Chicago, so I haven't been able to post or talk to anyone since I was accepted.

I am from Naperville and went to University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. I graduated from U of I in 2001 and moved to California for 2 years... I've finally made it back here and am waiting anxiously for school to start.

Anyways- can't wait to meet everyone! I would love to join everyone out on Tuesday night... keep us posted on what's going on!

Any questions about the area... I'd be happy to help! 🙂

I have a question for everyone:
Is anyone a runner or looking to run? I am training for the Chicago marathon (October 12) and would like to run with someone- the long runs are getting quite boring by myself 🙂
Let me know...

Kristin

So Kristin,

I was in naperville yesterday. I was storing my stuff at a freinds place. Nice area. Will you be living there and commuting?

Anyhow, as far as running, I have ran 5K's and 10K's. I am sure that you need someone more who runs long distance, but if you just feel like a short run (which will be long for me) I can be your running partner.

School is starting up... Can't wait to meet up with everyone Tuesday night.

-Aaron

p.s. if anyone knows if we can bring our own phones to our dorm rooms, please post a nice message. thanx a bunch...

Hey there everyone!

I hope everyone is enjoying the last few days before we start!

Aaron-
I will be commuting from Naperville to school- hopefully it won't be too bad- although 88 is horrible in the morning.

It would be great to have a running partner- we'll talk at orientation!

Can't wait to meet everyone! Enjoy Labor Day (hopefully the rain moves out)!

-Kristin

Aaron:

From what I understand, you can bring your own phone, but you can basically only receive phone calls for free. You can call out for on-campus #s and Downers Grove numbers, but anything else will require the use of a phone card! 🙁 Hope this helps you out....see you in less than 48 hours bud!!!!!! 🙂

Rev. Horace:
You will be getting information about titers during orientation. You can do it during that day the Wellness Center sets aside for doing mass immunizations for everyone, or you can set up an individual appointment at the wellness center to come in anytime on your own.

Karibo:
You are allowed to hang things up on the walls.
I remember that one wall was made of concrete, so you couldn't get a nail through that.

You can contact Mary Wilson, the Director of Residential Life, if you have specific questions about what to bring.

hey guys, matt byington here. i will be joining ya'll as an ms-1 this fall. from nebraska. lived in santa monica, CA for a year to train (track) after college. look forward to meeting you guys. see you wednesday.
ps: kristin, my wife, amberly, ran chicago marathon last year and boston marathon this year. i'm a miler but long runs are around 12 miles (on sundays). i'll be training over at north central track as well. send me a line.
it's been fun reading this board.
keep smiling!

Hey everyone!

Audrey-

I live very close to Cantera also... near the intersection of Diehl and Raymond. We'll talk at orientation!

Matt-

I've been considering some track workouts at North Central- I have a few friends that are/were on the team there and have run on the indoor and outdoor tracks there. But- I haven't really done too many track workouts since high school... just considered starting again to try and get a little more speed into my runs. Are going to be doing workouts with their team? Is your wife running Chicago this year?

I hope everyone moving in tomorrow has a successful (hopefully not rainy) move in day! See you all Wednesday!

Kristin

kristin,
no workouts w/ team (by myself); my wife isn't running chicago this year (she ran 3:10 last year). we live in aurora. talk to you wednesday. keep smiling,
matthew

I'd be up for going out tonight. I still have a decent amount of unpacking to do, but I should be finished by then. I just moved into Westomore Apartments in Lombard. Is anyone else living in this complex?
If someone wants to contact me my phone number is (970) 988-9023, otherwise I can just check this forum later.

Also, I've been running consistently this summer I would be interested in running with someone, but I'm not at the marathon level either; usually five or six miles at a time.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

Todd

I hope everyone is enjoying school...

-Aaron

Yeah... studying...

Bumping us up to the top! 🙂

Anyone else stressing yet about all our exams?!?! I feel so overwhelmed and behind. I hope it gets a little easier after our first block of exams, especially anatomy. That test is freaking me out! 😱

Good luck to all of you with studying. 😉

I feel perpetually behind. No matter how much I study I should be studying more. That's just how it goes. Well I must be off now. The pectoral and shoulder region is calling my name.

what's the pectoral and shoulder region???

aslo, is terhe ayonoe who can hlep me wtih my gbrucanlum pborelm? it semes to be a ltlite sftif.

that second part was for you adam! ummm...no, not the asking for your help, the spelling!

p.s. is there anyone who wants to join the "kill the 15% club"?😀

I'll sign up for that club. I wonder even if we got the % would they have moved it?? Who knows.... I still think the excuse about moving being bad b/c we wouldn't pay attention to the lectures before the test is crap. If this were true then we should take all of our tests in huge blocks so no class's test would detract from your learning in another class. Oh well, back to the inguinal paradise.

Well, I've been studying entirely to long and I realized that I still know nothing. Oh well, should make for an interesting next two days at the end of which I'm going to use a massive infusion of alcohol to wash my brain clean of all this nonsense. 😉

Ok... just happy I passed the written part today!

Those who did not sign the petition suck!!!+pissed+

Well, I'm happy about nothing that I did today. All those hours of studying wasted. Well, on to histo I guess...

Everyone says you cannot get anantomy points back. We'll just wait and see...

-Aaron

I think they should title the class "Memorizing Minutia of the Body" instead of gross anatomy. Histo is going to be a cake walk compared to that hell. More power to you if you can get some points back. I need everyone I can get.
