CCOM Class of 2010

Hey all,

Well, it looks as if I'll be joining you guys next year too! I'm also looking for a roomate and I have briefly looked around at apartments in the area. The City View apartments were really nice (I checked them out on my interview weekend), but a bit pricey. I also hung out at a friends place at Versailles, another complex, and that was nice as well (~$900). I'm an HPSP-er, so I'll most likely only be around for two years, anyone else HPSP? Well, if anyone is looking for a roomate, drop me a line (roomate with beer-pong table preferable).

Dude, Congrats on getting in. I don't need any roommates, but we got a beerpong table set up at my pad. So if any of you guys wanna get sloshed feel free.

I haven't gotten that email yet either, and I have had my deposit in for a while. Don't know what's up with that, I might email them if it doesn't come this week.

What's up with that? Talk about a bitter current student. And why did they even bother to post that in the interview feedback section? It's not like their interview was recent, and it's not even what they are complaining about. Oh well. +pity+

Hey! I'm looking for a roommate, I think. I still haven't decided if I want to brave the dorms yet. I'm also from NJ, but went to school in Chicago so I live there now. PM me if you're still interested!

Hey guys. I'm coming to CHI-TOWN too! yayy.. ok now I need some advice about where to live.. if anyone that already lives there could give me some advice.. that would rock.. I am looking at anything up to $1000-1200 max rent. and just 1 bed/bath. Something I could consider very nice.. and yet still close to campus. at least within 10-15 min drive.. ANY IDEAS??

thanks in advance!!!

I dont live in chicago, but I did spend a good day looking at places in the area. If you are planning on spending that much money, I would check out the International Village and the Yorktown II apartments. International Village has EXTREMELY nice single bedroom apartments (nice size ~760 sq ft). Solid marble countertops, oversized bath, sunken living room, accented walls etc, microwave, and dishwasher. They also have extra locked storage closets in the building to store excess stuff. The facilities are awesome; they have pool tables, 2 pools (indoor/outdoor), weight room, tennis courts and a really nice lounge. They also pay everything except electric. These apartments are 925/month and about a 10 minute drive to campus.

YorktownII is a high rise building. The rooms are nice (but not as nice as Int. village), and it is a 5 minute drive max to campus. Their rooms are around 850/month but they dont pay for any utilities. The plus to this place is that there seem to be more Midwestern students that live there.

I also looked at:
Clover creek 👎 and Bristol club ( nice but kind of far)
I will be heading back up in a week or so to check out some of the other complexes that I missed, and the campus apartments. PM me if you have questions about the other places.

Hey guys, I recently was accepted and am excited for going to school in close vicinity of Chicago. Are there any current students on here that have some feedback (good or bad) about the classes and perhaps rotation sites? How is life around campus and what are the major pros/cons of going to school here? Thanks

Actually, I would more or less agree with that assessment.

Hi fellow CCOMers,

When are you all planning to move to Downers Grove? I am from the East coast and thinking about taking some time off to travel and go home before I start school. Is moving there in early August too soon? I guess it also depends on whether or not I will get on-campus housing. Anyways, I am psyched about med school and can't wait to meet you all soon.

Regards,
SDG 😀

It sounds like you hate your school. Is there anything that you like about it?

I live in Yorktown II and i think it is pretty sweet, but of all my friends from school I'd say those living at City View have the fattest pads. Also, in response to the person who was ripping on OMM and Intro to Clinical Medicine I guess of all the classes I have they are the two that I dislike most. HOWEVER, this is why I choose not to attend either of these classes. I think you guys will all really enjoy CCOM. The faculty is amazing - especially the anatomy dept. The campus is sweet as many of you may know with the exception of those damn geese with their **** everywhere, and all my classmates are for the most part awesome. I think as a soon to be MSII, we as a class, will take it upon ourselves to hang with the class of 2010 more so than the current MSII's. Anywho, off to go get big so I can look like Buckeye.

I picked this school over an instate school because I thought this school was supposed to be markedly better.

Im doubting I made the right decision right about now. It might be better, but not 30k better.

I dont love this school, and I dont hate it. It is what it is.

Fair enough. The cost is pretty steep. My choice came down to KCOM or CCOM - I was impressed by the research done at CCOM and great residency match. I hope I made the right decision.

My choice was OUCOM or CCOM. Those were the two that I applied too. OUCOM is 17k and 2 hrs from home. CCOM is 35k and 5.5 hrs from home.

Oops.

I do appreciate your honest opinion. Thanks for sharing that with us. As an applicant who is waiting with much apprehension to hear back from CCOM, can you share some of your experience there? It seems like your opinion about the school is neutral; can you think of anything weak, terrific, so-so in CCOM? To me, CCOM seems like a great school (I am not trying to pick an argument) but I would like to know its weaknesses too before making a commitment.

Well I'm glad to see things picking up around here...and of course it's good to see another incoming CCOMer from Wisco🙂

Housing seems to be the most popular issue so far...and I'll just say again that I'm hoping to find a roommate or two amongst the incoming group to split a 2/3 bedroom. I've taken a look online at Rent.com and am giving the highest consideration to the places recommended in an earlier thread by Aaron Reitmann that give CCOM discounts.

Im neutral, because I know deep down that the reputation of the school balances out the things that I hate.

Academically, I would say there are few weaknesses, albeit some of the faculty could go to work.

However, I stopped going to all classes midway through my first quarter, so that's how I got through that part. I hate the exam schedule. It will rip your nads off. Its miserable. I was trying to figure out a weekend to go home this quarter....there isn't one. But on the flip side, we get a 3.5 month summer break.

Little things here get on my nerves. Especially some of the 'security' guards....perhaps you remember the man that at at the front of the library with the glasses.

For me, there is little to hate, but really, there is little to love either. My tune may change when i take the boards, or when Im applying for residency etc.

I'm 100% paid on my deposit and 96% sure I'll be in Downers grove next year (still deliberating over my final decision) - I hope we can continue to use this forum to get to know eachother and network before school starts.

Best of luck to those of you just finishing up undergrad or grad programs before heading to CCOM - and a big Keep Truckin' to those of you who are like me and have to continue to surivive the workworld right up 'til classes start.

Have a good weekend-
Nick

On my interview day I swung by City View to check out the apartments, and they look pretty nice, although a bit pricey. 1 bedrooms range from about 1,080-1,700, 2 bedrooms are from about 1,500-2,200, and they have a three bedroom model that, based on the square footage, is probably in the ballpark of 2,300-2,600. So, it is a bit expensive, but what it lacks in price attractivity, it more than makes up for in it's nice decor/amenities. Anyways, jsut thought I'd put this out there for anyone looking for a roomate for the fall...it seems like there are a few of us, so maybe we could put our heads sometime and figure something out!

Hey everyone ---

I will most likely be joining all of you in the fall at CCOM! 🙂

Did anyone else get the Meet & Greet email? Is anyone going? Is it worthwhile going? I live in Chicago and don't have a car so it's somewhat difficult for me to get down there, but if it's worth going then I would try to find a ride. Is anyone living in Chicago planning on going and would be willing to give me a ride?

Thanks guys -- hope to meet you all sooooon!

Jenn

Yea, has anyone decided if they are going to this? I am thinking about going...do any current students know if this is worth going to, if you had one last year?

Hey guys---

I just noticed that this year's CCOM Match list was up on MWU Net.
Here's the link:
2006 CCOM Matchlist

Oh yeah and I'm from just outside of Madison, WI and lived in NJ last year while going to grad school in Philly. UW-Madison undergraduate, Drexel U. grad school, now working as Research Specialist/Clinical Coordinator at UW Med School with an Alzheimer's disease study.

You happen to know the chief of neurosurgery? Really good family friend.

Don't know Dr. Dempsey personally, but I've seen him around the hospital. He's obviously the man here---and he even has his picture on start page of the UW Hospital physician search engine, surely not a coincidence.

My acquaintances at the UW are more in Neurology, Geriatrics, Neuropsychology and Internal Med/Family Med.

And what was that comment earlier about "subpar Big 10 university?"

Please see here:
UW Link

And, come on, let's not forget that we got the Women's Hockey crown...

For Laboholic---you guys did alright on the Big list too. I've witnessed the Iowa City party atmosphere firsthand, and would have to agree with the recognition.

Yea, we are the #8 party school! What an honor.

i like the sound of that!

In addition to the women's hockey crown, the men are in the national championship game on saturday! The survey says it right- we work hard and play hard at UW

I'm graduating from Indiana University this May.

As an aside (somewhat related), the newest Interventional Neuroradiologist and Endovascular Neurosurgeon here is a DO (from NSUCOM).

Its a small world that you know him. Ive known them since I was in kindergarten.

Im not even going to click on that UW link, whatever it was. My computer prevents me from clicking on viruses.
